Sam the Man!

Sam Alpine Air

I took this photo of Sam on Saturday, in Canmore along the Bow River. While Mr. MK and Lizzy skied Sam, Georgia and I spent the day throwing rocks, climbing rocks, playing in the park and I managed to sneak in a wee bit of shopping (well window shopping).

Sam is getting a hair cut tonight. The major topic of discussion around the dinner table is—> ‘really short or just a trim?’. Recently a friend of mine, has repeatedly told me, “he could be a girl, that hair … those eyes” or “imagine him with pigtails, he’d be a really pretty girl“. It is really starting to BUG me! Piss off already. The same friend has a girl who is often mistaken for a boy, surely she knows it doesn’t make anyone feel good when you say these kinds of things?

Sam likes the hair (except, when it is being brushed) and says he likes it long. He also doesn’t seem overly concerned to have it cut. I love it! If I could order hair, I would order his. The color is great, it’s thick, it curls, it’s a crime it’s on a boy’s head.

Hmmm … what to do?

Results here tomorrow!

You see that Alpine Breeze blowing through Sam’s hair? You to can have this experience (*wink*) ... ***

Hey, beautiful hair is just as important on a man as it is on a girl or woman! I think he looks fantastic, and you’re right, if I wasn’t Chinese, I’d want hair like his… (I’ve seen blonde Asians, it just looks odd…) If he’s comfortable with it as is, I’d say just trim it a bit, keep it out of his eyes, you know. But if it’s a hassle, or if he’s bothered by “outside” comments, oh heck, just cut it short and then no one will have to deal with ridiculous stereotypes anymore.

Your photography is really getting quite professional!

i’m a fan of boys with tousled longish hair (though i think too long gets into 80’s silly metalishness), but yes, the comments can get old… when we cut our son’s hair short, i was torn as it looked so darn cute, but he def. looked like a little man…much more ‘grown up’. that’s good & bad i guess. ;)

i never had too much trouble w/people actually mistaking him for a girl as his clothes were always pretty gender specific, though i would get hippie comments. now my issue is i really like boyish stuff with just a tad bit of girly flare on my daughter, but due to her short hair, people are constantly calling her a boy (dude..do you not see the PINK SHOES??). course i’ve just recently discovered the (easy diaper changing) joys of dresses, so that’s been helping, which is nice since the stinker won’t wear bows in her hair.

I always think in all your photo’s what beauitful hair. Let him keep it!!

  4. JaimeS Says:

It should be up to him if he wants to keep it or not… I think his hair is very handsome (was going to say beautiful but decided against it).

Awesome picture!! Can’t wait to see the new cut and what he decides.

  7. Deanne S. Says:

There are so many boys around now with the long, shaggy look – he fits right in (and looks good too, some don’t suit that look). It would probably be good for his self-esteem if he gets to decide.

  8. Tara R Says:

my son has beautiful hair too… I wish I could leave it long and curly! He was getting called a girl though (he is 5) and my husband shaved it short yesterday. I almost cried. I love those curls!

His hair is a nice color. I think a trim to lessen the blow. Yes, I can smell the “Alpine Breeze” right now. Take care, Cindi

  10. Lucy Says:

I love the long hair and really I think I would leave it up to him, unless I (the parent) totally hated the hair style.

  11. Naomi Says:

Sam is a pretty boy but I don’t see anything wrong with that. He doesn’t seem prissy. Not that it would matter if he was. I think your friend must have some issues!

It seems like long hair for boys is back in, for sure. All the kids seem as shaggy as they were when I was little. As long as the Dorothy Hammill do and moustaches don’t come back, I’m cool with it…

It has never once occurred to me that he’d make a pretty girl…I think he’s very boy-ish to begin with…he doesn’t have a girl’s face or facial expressions. Just tell Friend to stfu because she’s giving you a complex hides

    :P

I think just a trim but I would also leave it up to him.

He seems old enough to know how he likes his hair—obviously, no one at school is giving him a hard time about it or he’d have asked you for a shave a long time ago right? As for your friend, well, maybe she’s just jealous of hos gorgeous locks. Who wouldn’t be?

We went to Banff National park this past summer and had a wonderful time. We stopped off in Canmore and its a cute little town. Hair cuts and kids are always difficult. You should meet him half way. At least you both get a bit of say that way.

  18. Kisha Says:

That is such a great picture of Sam, I think he looks good with the hair, curls and all.

  19. Joa Says:

    Just a trim!
Ça arrive tout le temps à mon grand de se faire prendre pour une fille… mais je lui garde quand même la nuque un peu longue, c’est trop cute!

  21. Jennifer Says:

I think the shaggy look is precious for younger boys. It does seem to be the style these days. Let him decide.

  22. Daniel Says:

I couldn’t understand some parts of this article , but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.

  23. Aileen Says:

    I have a Sam too but mine’s a girl!! :)

I think his hair looks good as it is. It’s very sweet. Maybe let him decide??

I had my son’s hair cut when he turned 1 and it was so heartbreaking!! Those curls never came back the same way again. I realize this isn’t your son’s first haircut but…

I like his hair, I too debate over cutting my little guys curly locks. He looks so cute with them. But then there are moments where he just looks like a mad scientist!
