Drugged and Renovated

Published by on

I spent last Friday and Monday at the hospital, in the MS clinic being poked and prodded and tested. To make things worse I also woke up Monday with tooth ache. A tooth ache that felt like tonsillitis and an ear ache too. The doctors drugged me so that they could continue to poke and prod me. They also wanted an MRI of my brain, but I am claustrophobic so on top of the narcotics they placated me with valium.

Zippity do da, zippity ay, my oh my what wonderful day …

It was some time during this drug induced euphoria that Mr. MK informed me that the bathroom faucet needed replacing. Only because I was impaired I told him to, “do whatever you think is best”.

Our house is falling down around us, but I hate renovations. They stress me out. So …

I am pretty sure I didn’t mean this.

Or this.

Even the kids are involved.

This one brings me ice water and narcotics. I’m secretly referring to her as Nurse Ratched. Shhh … don’t tell.

Mounds of antibiotics and painkillers seem to be taking care of the tooth issue. Rotten teeth freak me out, so I was happy to hear that tooth seems perfectly intact but the nerve seems inflamed. I am going to some sort of specialist on Monday. I am determined to ‘keep’ the tooth. It’s a wisdom tooth so they’re always trying to pull it out … no one seems to care that I use it!

Our ugly 70’s tiles have been replaced with Italian travertine. Apparently you can’t mix Italian travertine and tacky linoleum, so I’ve been told I picked out a really nice marble flooring yesterday. Mr. MK says, “when you’re not so stoned we’ll go out an pick out a sink”. I don’t believe him, it’s probably stashed in the van. There’s a lovely blue paint on the walls, picked out by my sister in New Orleans.

According to the Neurologist I have a brain stem injury. Nothing that I won’t get over, but when the brain is injured you’re fatigued. VERY, VERY fatigued. To those relatives that asked me if I’m lazy (think that I’m lazy or implied I am lazy) … NO I AM NOT! I am brain damaged. The very fact that I’d rather be brain damaged than lazy concerns me.

MK xo

Sounds like you’ve had a rough week. I hope the doctors get you all fixed up soon. Do brain stem injuries like that usually heal on their own?

On a better note, it looks and sounds like you’re going to have a beautiful bathroom once it’s all completed. I love the tiles. :)

Oh my goodness! I hope you are feeling better. On the other hand it is probably better to be drugged while renovations are going on!

Naomi · April 24, 2009 at 9:36 pm

Oh boy. I hope next week goes A LOT better for you!

We need to do that to the kids’ bathroom, too. Not looking forward to it.

Oh yeah…renos and wisdom teeth – I hear ya! The dentist is currently trying to pull out my wisdom tooth too which is 100% sidewasys and aiming into my back tooth…and mostly under the gum. Um yeah. I NEED that tooth in there -mostly cuz I just don’t want to get it cut pulled out.

Mr. MK is very handy, I’m sure the bathroom will turn out amazing. Hope you are feeling a lot better very soon MK. Love from all of us down here!

jafer · April 25, 2009 at 10:55 am

I wish someone would drug me and then go renovate my home. Ok, what about just drugging me? I’m good with either.

Glad to hear that you’re (pretty much) ok.

Only you could make a story full of drugs, demolition, and brain damage funny! That’s quite a special talent.

There are so many reasons why this post has made me fall head over heels in love with you. Truly. And though we have never met, I think we knew eachother in the “great beyond” – perhaps before we were born.

Anyway – I could comment on the “why”s of my new found love for you … but I dont think it is necessary. Just know it :)

I could read this post over and over and over again — and relate to it everytime – on so many levels.

I had to go back and search through your archives and bio. I haven’t been reading your blog very long but was shocked and saddened to hear you have MS. My mom was diagnosed when I was 12 and it has been a long, difficult road every since. My prayers go out to you and your family with hope that you will benefit from future medical advances that she is not privy to.

Wow, what a week! I’m sooooo relieved to hear that you’re okay. Thinking of you LOTS! How can you survive so long with no bathroom (even without landing yourself in hospital). You’re amazing!!!

Rose@Car Parts · April 26, 2009 at 2:15 am

I hope you won’t have many side effects from the tons of drugs that you’ve ingested. I’m glad you and your bathroom are both fine now.

Safire · April 26, 2009 at 5:22 pm

Valium + renovations = the best thing I’ve heard of in a long time. :) Hope your week goes better than this, though. Ouch!

Really sorry to hear you had such a difficult week, but glad it sounds like it’s all going to be alright. Definitely a bit of a concern that you would rather be brain damaged than lazy! There’s a lot to said for laziness every once in a while. If you need convincing try the book ‘How To Be Idle’ by Tom Hodgkinson.

jamie · April 27, 2009 at 8:15 am

Awww, I so sorry to hear about all of that! But hey, maybe this way you won’t doubt “your” renovation choices??

Wow. Those pictures are my worst nightmare. Way too reminiscent of the bathroom renovation my brother and I took on once.

Lullaby Baby Carriers · April 27, 2009 at 10:12 pm

Good grief! That’s quite a story! Hope you’re feeling better soon… and until you are, I think you should claim dibs on spending some quiet time in that gorgeous new bathroom, soaking in the tub with candles and bubbles. I would say wine too, but that depends on how drugged you still are! LOL!

Jennifer Steuern · April 28, 2009 at 7:07 am

oh no.. brain damage sounds really serious! Just let everyone run after you and dont stress about the renovations. We just got heating installed and the place was a mess for a week.. I couldnt stand it.. but now I’m ok.. everything is back to normal AND it’s warm!

soulsu · April 29, 2009 at 1:05 pm

I am sorry you have to go through all of this crazy medical madness. On the bright side, you are going to have one hot bathroom when it’s all done! Looks beautiful!

witchypoo · April 29, 2009 at 2:48 pm

Is the brain stem injury the result of the MS, or is it causing MS like symptoms? I’m sorry you are so tired all the time. And? I hate MRIs too. It messes with your energy field, and not in a good way.

It’s a severe pain experience for a girl like you. Pain reliever is good for children like you. I believe dentists can provide light-cure.

Baby Diaper Cake · May 7, 2009 at 4:10 am

I hope you are ok and I know how hard it can be living amongst renovations. We did up a house a few years ago and didn’t have a kitchen for 3 months, don’t know how we did it. Glad we didn’t have kids at the time.

Richard T · May 7, 2009 at 11:52 am

Hope you clean that mess.

Zack J. Garza · May 7, 2009 at 9:19 pm

Hi,
I hope your new bathroom will be amazing. Just take care of yourself in the hospital until you have the new bathroom.

Thanks!

Yikes. At least you are getting a new bathroom, maybe if your tooth needs some sort of extraction or needs major dental work you will get new flooring! Just trying to keep things positive for you, hope everything goes well.

antof9 · May 24, 2009 at 1:49 pm

I’d definitely rather be brain damaged than lazy, so … you go, girl. I think my favorite part of this entry is, “when you’re not so stoned…”

Hope you’re feeling better — I know I’m behind on my Google Reader, so my hope is that you’re a gazillion percent better by now.

wow, what a story! I have so much respect for your sense of humor! When I got hospitalized, I was the most miserable creature in the world. I missed my house and I missed my bedroom the most. And my husband couldn’t think of a better way to cheer me up than preparing a surprise for me. He painted the walls of the bedroom in a cheerful green color. The same same color as the walls of my hospital ward. Ah, well….

kategvt · June 29, 2009 at 4:24 pm

well at least u have a beautiful new bathroom to feel crappy in! i hope u are feeling refreshed after your trip!

Postcard Printing · June 29, 2009 at 7:36 pm

Hey do not stress yourself because of the problems in the house. I am sure hubby and kinda can do that. You need to focus more into yourself. Take care for the kids.

Now a days many doctors are looking for making money only and they never think about humanity.

Jay · February 5, 2011 at 11:26 pm

Its a shame with all the money generated from medicine etc. and the advances in technology, governments still are only interested in the market side of medicine and not the bettering of man kind.

Timber Floor Sanding · December 11, 2012 at 4:32 pm

That looks stunning! If everyone had the confidence to take renovations into their own hands like that, the world would be a much more creative and interesting-looking place.

(And all the best with your recovery.)

mommyknows · April 24, 2009 at 8:15 pm

The fact that I’d rather have brain damage than be lazy is somewhat disturbing. https://mommyknows.com/drugged-and-renovated/
