Watercolors

Published by on

Yesterday, out of the blue, I decided we’d ALL paint (Mr. MK too). Nope, not the walls, on paper just for fun. This is VERY, VERY unlike me! The children looked shocked.

Generally, I discourage arts and crafts (until the sitter arrives) due to the mess and general chaos! I am not sure what came over me?! It might be the 30 Tiny Moments, forcing me to be a little bit more creative and look at things a wee bit differently. There I go, getting all artsy-fartsy on you.

By the time we were set up and I had explained the strict watercolor bylaws rules to Sam and Liz, Georgia had fallen asleep on the couch. YAH! Oops, did I say that out loud? (Sorry Georgie)

What rules? Well, you know the standard painting strict watercolor bylaws rules –> make sure your brush is clean before you put it in a new color, because if you use black and then put it in the yellow and get it dirty; I’ll have to beat you with a BIG stick. If you rinse your dirty brush in my clean water, then I’ll beat you with the BIG stick again. Keep your brush on your own paper. No arguing. No yelling. No whining (SAM). It sounds like a barrel of laughs, eh?

Surprisingly enough, we had a great time! All strict watercolor bylaws rules were followed, the majority of the time.

Liz did attempt to pummel Sam after he painted this picture of her with a forked tongue.
Lizzy with a Snake Tongue - by SamSheesh Sam, I didn’t mention it earlier, but that violates strict watercolor bylaw rule 15(b) –> don’t demonize your sister! Must I spell absolutely everything out for you? HUH?

Poor Lizzy she was being such a good girl … painting this lovely cabin.
Country Cottage - by LizzyCome to think of it, that forked tongue may have been the beginning of the litigious New Jersey attitudes that surfaced later in the day.

When Georgia isn’t present, I totally forget about the meltdowns, tantrums and her naughty side. All I can remember is lightness and sunshine …
Georgia - by MommyKnowsSo that’s how I painted her.

Then she woke up. Grumpy! She immediately violated strict watercolor bylaws rules 1a, 1b, 1c, 2b, 2c, 3a, 3b, 3c, 12e, and 14f!

30 Tiny Moments – Day 12

Georgia - The Artist as a Wee Girl
Worst of all, she didn’t keep her darn brush on her own paper! Look at what she is doing to my sweet masterpiece.

You’re a wee tyrant Georgia!

All in all, we had a lovely afternoon. It left me wondering, when ‘art’ stopped being one of my favorite things to do and became just a mess to clean up?

The Sleep Huggers Contest is OVER!

I will announce the winners soon. I promise. You should see what is coming later this week. You’re gonna love it!

Wow! I didn’t know you were so talented! What other surprises do you have up your sleeve? Or do I really want to know?

Looks like SO MUCH FUN! You’re a cool Mom! Like you, I usually discourage arts & crafts (or at least I wait until I have one child asleep or at school and then I will do some arty stuff with the other one … but never both at once!!!!)

I love your paintings especially!

WoW!! That painting of Georgia is gorgeous!! You are just amazing (even more so than we already knew)! At least in Sam’s picture of Lizzie he gave her pretty eyelashes :) And with all the piercings and self-mutilation that goes on with teens these days, who knows, maybe the forked tongue look will be very “in” soon.

lol, i too have avoided most arts & crafts b/c of the mess & clean-up (oh the guilt…). the other day on a whim i bought sidewalk chalk thinking that would be a fun easy activity….no. i forgot how messy sidewalk chalk is when you lie down in it…and, and wipe your hands on your clothes….and color your clothes with it…and eat it….arg.

Great post! You are quite talented with a brush–and watercolour too–that’s one of the hardest to work with!

I am glad your family had a great time doing art. It’s such a pleasant way to spend time.

Fun! I can’t wait for Cade to understand making his own art. I tired to paint on canvas for thim the other day, hoping it would have a childlike quality. Nope-it has the “i’m an adult and suck at painting” quality. So its headed to the trash.

Wow, you’re pretty good at water colors! And the forked tongue is hilarious. I used to hate letting my son play with PlayDoh. I would find little PlayDoh pebbles smashed into my carpet. Now I make him keep it on a jelly roll pan with cookie cutters and no more (big) mess.

What a fun mom you are!

Very cute. I would make Georgia cover up that pretty shirt, though.

Great artwork! I love watercolours.

Michelle · February 11, 2008 at 10:53 am

Kim, that is a FANTASTIC watercolor. And I would have screeched in absolute horror if I’d seen Georgia destroying your other masterpiece in person….! Ah, you must be a much more patient mommy than I. I totally hear you on the watercolor/painting thing. I do crafts with my kids almost daily, but have to be in an exceedingly good mood to get out the messy stuff! And the kiddos definitely have to be on opposite sides of the table.

I use watercolors because they are less messy than the Tempera paints. Which my niece likes to smear all over her hands and do hand print pictures.

For craft time, I usually just set out some construction paper, scissors, stickers and glue sticks and let her cut and paste to her hearts content.

Great paintings!

Hi, I love to go to our local newspaper and if they have any rolled print paper left, you can purchase it for hardly anything. Then, you unroll it and go to town! I love the pictures. Your picture is wonderful! I couldn’t even draw a stick person…..Cindi

Deanne S. · February 11, 2008 at 2:22 pm

I totally agree, crafts are few and far between with three little ones and their two minute attention spans! Wayyyyyy tooo much work for mommy!

Can’t wait to see who won the sleep hugger…..

Great job letting down your mommy needs it clean and going to town with the kids!!

Kami · February 11, 2008 at 4:59 pm

HA! I feel the same way about art and usually end up yelling about the “rules” and no one has any fun.

Tee hee! I sould like mother of the year don’t I?

Great painting by you, MK – you have serious talent!

crap! did you paint that picture? looks like a coloring book…

i was having a virgo (control freak) moment today when grammie brought over PLAYDOUGH…jez…little blue flakes everywhere…thanks mom…i just couldn’t even enjoy that (short lived) joy that i was having james do art…

ps- i HATE mixing the watercolor colors too…as a kid i never even wanted to use my watercolors to “save” ’em…

Andrea · February 11, 2008 at 7:07 pm

Painting…I have not tried that with Tate yet, as I’m sure he would not understand any watercolor rules – particularily “don’t mix the colors” and “keep the brush on the paper”. Sounds like fun though – minus the forked tongue (too funny!) and Georgia’s…ummm…forgetfulness of the rules! ;) I love your painting of Georgia by the way – ADORABLE. Now if only I could paint like that!

I don’t understand why you don’t paint!! Yours is FANTASTIC! If I could paint anything like that, it would be hanging on the wall in my house!

Michelle · February 11, 2008 at 8:38 pm

I loved Sam’s picture – it is very creative. You must keep that one!! Your pictures are beautiful as well.

Erin · February 11, 2008 at 8:41 pm

Georgia is adorable, and you are a great artist…if I would have tried that it would have looked like a stick person!!!!!! Glad to hear that the painting was a success for the most part!
