Sew-and-Run or Sewicide / Happy Book Day to You ~ the Series Winner too!

12/365 - hope 5 - vintage buttons
Photography 12/365 / OWP Hope 5/28 – Vintage buttons from my grandma’s stash. I like the colors.

(Hope may have been the wrong word for me! I’m not quite that sappy on a daily basis. What this image has to do with hope, has me stumped. Ummm … I hope someone besides me cleans these up?)

I am upcycling wool sweaters again, which translates to –> the kitchen is a freaking disaster zone!

I know I said, “crafts schmafts” (and I meant it when I said it), but I somehow find my way from one craft site to another, they are creating great things, and I just can’t help myself. I MUST sew! Mmm … Esty, I love it!

Sadly, I’ve nothing to show you except the button mess above. I don’t think I am one of those people who can take you photo-step by photo-step through a craft project, while actually completing the project. Every brain cell available is focused on the project (to hell with the children!). The sewing machine operation has me totally out of my element. I couldn’t possibly operate it and use a camera (or parent) at the same time. I don’t even breathe while I sew. SERIOUSLY. I hold my breath and pray with each seam. It is terrifying.

I’ve discovered, using a sewing machine seriously stresses me out. My heart pounds, I sweat, it feels like my first driving lesson. Thank GOD there are no other ‘sewers’ on the road, because I would have zigzagged them to death. It would most likely be classified as a ‘sew and run’, because I stop for nothing but ginormous swigs of ice water (I’m sweating remember!). It’s sewicide for my nerves. Yet, I shall persevere.

I’ll quit yakking about my terrify afternoon of crafting and get to the really important stuff, like the winner of this week’s ‘Happy Book Day to You ~ the Series‘ giveaway.

The winner is:

Debbie of Suburb Sanity – email me please @ kim (at) mommyknows (dot) com and let me know your address and which book you’d like.

I want to know about your most recent creative project? Feel free to leave a link to photos or instructions in the comments. If you hate crafts, you can tell me all about that too!

Love the button picture! I couldn’t sew my way out of a paper bag, and some day, I’d love to learn, but these days my crafts are limited to ten minutes making paper hearts with my two year old because that’s about how long his attention span is…and he’s the older one. Maybe when they can play on their own for 30 minutes straight, I could figure out a Mommy Craft to do!

Woo hoo! I won a book. Thank you! I will email you the details.
I have a stack of things I need to break out the sewing machine to fix. Maybe today:)

I love crafts, but hate sewing machines. I’ve finally come to grips with this and do almost everything by hand. Is it strange though that despite my dislike of sewing machines I actually own two of them?

I just finished knitting a cardigan for my 2 year old and about 6 baby blankets for the plethera of babies being born in our circle of friends. Now that our baby has arrived however I’m pretty sure the crafting will be back burner again for awhile.

Oh I don’t sew. I think I know how. But I never do. And crafts? They get me all clamey and nervous. I’ll do them if I have to. But I typically will choose not to. My latest project? Vinyl lettering on a board. It’s cute! And I didn’t get clammy because all it really is is one big sticker. I can stick stickers!

Oh, I also scrapbook but haven’t in months. Sigh…gotta get back into that one.

Well I used to work on scrapbook project and it was huge one. 3 different themes at one time with 3 running boys around me. Not really hard to do the job, but the environment was killing me.!

I am knitting these super amazing socks http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEsummer07/PATTcoupling.html called Coupling… my pic is here… http://www.flickr.com/photos/jamsideup/3257349885/in/photostream/ I know, I know, I’m not very far, but it’s not a ‘children are up’ kind of knitting project. I’m also knitting leg warmer type things for that gap between my boot and my ankle. On the side? I’m making diapers BECAUSE MY KID WILL NOT TOILET TRAIN! But that’s another rant. ;)

love the buttons! i see the hope…something modern & chic about the past…pining for a slower pace & personal connection, but not losing something ‘shiny’ about today. ha. i’m grasping at straws. ;)

i am ‘craft-challenged’, but i wish i weren’t. occasionally i try. i have an on again-off again relationship with “textile crafts” (crotchet & knit) for the past oh…20 years? ha. (that makes me feel old), but you’d never know it’s been that long if you look at my ‘work’. last weekend we rescued my sewing machine from the depths of the garage mess…but i’ve yet to make it stand upright. i’m almost motivated. :)

I actually really believe that crafts can do the opposite of stressing one out. When you don’t think of your craft as a mission to accomplish but simply you let yourself go – whatever the carft will look like will be fine, then you can gain peace while doing it.

Using a sewing machine though will probably not achieve that relaxation, because the nature of sewing with a machine is doing an accurate job. I suggest sewing by hand.

Hello, Love the buttons! I use buttons sometimes when I make handmade cards. That is what I enjoy crafting. Friends and I get together to socialize and create. Cindi

What a cool picture! I save buttons, too, which is weird because I totally do NOT sew…but I have a box in which every button goes…and it has some from my grandmother, too. What is it about vintage buttons that makes them just so much cooler than contemporary ones? Of course, there’s the nostalgia factor and the connectness to ancestors, but they also just ARE generally cooler. Craftspersonship?

I love vintage buttons too! That’s a great picture. I also prefer sewing by hand. I always mess stuff up when I use the sewing machine.

TaxSoftwareSite · February 10, 2009 at 1:36 pm

I love the colors of the buttons on that picture! Crafting is one of the things that I really enjoy spending my time with.. I admit it may not look so great but in time I know I’ll learn! I messed up too!

Hello! I really liked the buttons! I am working with my father on his new arts and crafts website, http://www.looledo.com. The website is dedicated to connecting people with an interest in fun, kids crafts, science projects and more. It’s an excellent resource for parents and teachers alike. If you’d be so kind as to take a look, we’d love to hear your comments.
