Saving the English Language One Word at a Time

Published by on

It’s time to confess, I have a fair amount of succisive time. I spend most of that succisive time on the computer. Aimlessly wandering around the blogosphere and www looking for nothing and always finding something.

Today, I happened upon Save The Words and felt compelled to adopt (it’s free). It was hard to choose just one word (there aren’t enough succisive moments in the day to take care of TWO). There they were, so sad, lonely, ignored, unused AND if you can believe it … dropped from the dictionary!

I’m now the proud parent of :

SUCCISIVE –> of spare or extra time.

succisive - of spare or extra time.

succisive - of spare or extra time.

AHHH, isn’t it cute?

It was a tie between succisive and cacatory (accompanied by diarrhea), but then I thought about it and it was evident that I have way more succisive moments than cacatory moments (REALLY), and I quickly snapped up succisive before some other wack-job mom with too much time on her hands did.

Doesn’t your heart just break for poor Cacatory? Left at Save the Words, dropped from the dictionary and soon to be forgotten … maybe forever!

Hmmm … because I have too much succisive time, I got to dreaming about saving hundreds of words and just how I could help that happen …

There are lots of good words that our modern day culture won’t ever know about. We’re into this new slang that is easier to say.

I was coming to tell you that I did it, but I see my blog already linked itself here! Always in a hurry, that silly blog. Anyway, thank you for making up such a fab meme and for tagging me. That was wonderfully fun to learn a bunch of new words. You’re so cool!

Cute idea…just wish they could have avoided the yucky misuse of the word adoption… : ( I won’t be adopting any words, I’ll save that for kids.

Madeline · March 14, 2009 at 8:11 pm

My mom would love that! She’s such a logophile.

“Shakes head in disbelief”, You people wasting all of your succisive hours on resurrecting terms and missives that should be left to pass.

There is no way to starrify this perplexion of conundrums in a quantifiably
enumerated way without singing and dancing to Supercalafragilisticexpealidoshous and humming the tune to Gilligans Island.

There was a study that said the in the 1950s people in America had twice the vocubalary that they do now.

Broke But Still Drinking · March 15, 2009 at 10:41 am

I was sitting at the bar and the man beside me started rambling about nothing, the effects of his speech were cacatory.

Anneli · March 15, 2009 at 11:31 am

Hah, thanks for explaining the meaning of that word, I’d never even heard it before! XD

I’m European though, so I have an excuse. :p

Your use of the word succisive is not very veteratorian.

Great post. I’m off now, to adopt disestablishmentarianism.

debbie · March 15, 2009 at 7:11 pm

I suppose I could go adopt a word but then I hardly have any time to blog, never mind going to other blogs and grabbing words.

I tried to google succisive and I guess it really IS dropped out of the english language – couldn’t find a meaning there.

Free Laptops · March 16, 2009 at 2:31 pm

Definitely going to look into this… it’s a shame to see words disappear to history. The hard bit is going to be choosing just one!

kimmi · March 16, 2009 at 6:57 pm

Great post! Love it! I’m going to find a few words to adopt!

embarazo · March 16, 2009 at 7:43 pm

Another vocabulary adopted to my own list. This is fun. I enjoyed reading your article.

Sorry it took me a few days to get over here, but NOW I understand that cacatory comment! =)

I’ll check out that website later tonight when I’m at home. I have a feeling that my coworkers don’t want to walk by and see “cacatory” plastered on my screen!

4th of July Crafts · March 18, 2009 at 11:41 am

Very interesting site you came across and I believe words should be saved. I am on my mission to be the hero of some poor word out there!! Thanks for the post

Damselfly · March 18, 2009 at 7:20 pm

That’s actually a brilliant idea. I just might have to do it. If I have the brain cells to remember to do it. Because sometimes my succisive moments border on the cacatory! ;)

I’m now the proud owner of Pugnastic…to be good at boxing. I’m not an expert or anything but you would think the word would Thug-tastic or Jab-ilicious. Oh well.

If only I were Angelina Jolie, I would take more than one orphan home.

i think your blog is so unique and exciting :) thank you for recommending this website! I really enjoyed it :)

I adopted is “redamancy” which means “the act of loving in return”

Daniel Aloy · April 12, 2009 at 9:04 am

Although I’m pugnacious about the use of proper English, I must admit that languages are living entities that grow, transform, and mutate. I think that we should protect the proper usage of our language, but we must also allow it to grow. As an example, consider all the French words that crossed over into English – possibly a result of the Norman Conquest – and the present day attitude of some European governments wishing to keep their language “pure.”

I welcome new words and new functions for them, because it will inject life into our language, as it should.

bullion · April 16, 2009 at 2:45 am

The English language is in decline by design. The dumbing down of people, their language and subsequent lifestyle is part of big business agenda.

Why ? because all big business want is a society of dumbed down workers. Or modern slaves. I shall go choose a word now – have a good day folks!

Check out tpuc.org too see what im on about :)

Lisa @ Work at Home Mom Revolution · April 27, 2009 at 2:51 pm

I never thought about it. But I guess words can disappear if they’re not used, just as new words are appearing all the time.

Angela McCall · May 8, 2009 at 7:44 am

I am a bit overwhelmed when I see even headlines on national TV and in newspapers where words are misspelled or misused. Are we evolving an illiterate society? AM

Robert · May 14, 2009 at 7:26 am

It sees that each generation is dropping words and the English language is becoming less sophisticated and perhaps less elegant. The proof is evident in reading English literature from late 1800s and early 1900s. This is a great post. I think one contributing reason could be that our educational system is in trouble.

Vera Bradley · June 2, 2009 at 10:23 pm

Whoa, that’s such a cool idea. I love words and wish more of them would be adopted instead of forgotten. Having a word of the day would be a great idea to add to your blog too. It’s always good to not only learn new words but recall the ones we may have forgotten over time. Nice post.

Gouri · September 10, 2009 at 10:46 am

Nice concept. But it seems save the word site is down at this time (of posting the comment)

I just adopted succisive myself! I guess I’ve had enough succisive time on my hands that I’m browsing through Save the Words haha.
I am very happy to come upon the website. Attempting to save the English language is a great idea and I’m happy to be contributing!
