Real Food – A Burger & Fries (the way they were meant to be)

Published by on

We rarely eat fast food, but that doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy a burger and fries.

homestyle burger & fries

We just like them ‘home-style’ … oh man, this was good! Do yourself a favour and make this for supper tonight.

My creation

Start by adding 1 egg, about 1/3 cup of milk, and a cup of bread crumbs in a medium bowl. Then add spices. I used approximately 1 teaspoon of each of the following: Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard, cayenne pepper, salt, pepper, garlic salt, chili powder, onion powder and paprika.

Note: use whatever spices you think your family will like. We all like a bit of kick so I use cayenne. If you are an onion fan you could use a pack of onion soup mix or even finely chopped onion.

Stir well and then add the ground beef. I used just over a 1 lb of beef.

ground beef

I get my ground beef from my parents farm. It doesn’t get any better. It’s lean and I know the animal was healthy and well cared for. You’ll notice in the photo collage, that it’s not bright pink like the ground beef you buy in the store, that’s because it not chemically treated. I like that too!

patty

Now form into patties. I use my hands, I don’t like this part, but it has to be done.

A burger wouldn’t be the same without fries.

homestyle fries

I cut up these new garden potatoes in to wedges. I left the peel on. I drizzled EVOO on them added lots of course salt, pepper and some Montreal Steak spices. Then I baked them in the oven at 450 f for about 30 minutes. I used a stone baking dish, it seems to make them crispier (totally not necessary though).

condiments

Now it’s time to get condiments ready and the table set. If you are going to grill your burgers make sure you have it preheated and ready to go.

buns

I made fresh buns for this batch of burgers, but it’s not the norm. Grab a bag of burger buns from the grocery store. Truthfully, I prefer wholewheat to this homemade type, but I’d run out of grocery budget and I’m strict with myself :)

Mr. MK always does the grilling. I give the grilling times (otherwise he under or over cooks). These are 5.5 minutes per side on a medium high grill.

All that’s left is to build your burger and then ENJOY!

we’re having burgers tonight! :) those buns look REALLY good…i typically buy ours b/c my homemade buns are super hit or miss in regards to texture (often to stiff & we have to dig holes into it so the burger can fit in our mouths!). as usual, my own fault b/c i make them whole wheat. if i would just remember to buy white flour more often i could probably make them softer with a half & half mixture!

As for the meat, i would also LOVE to mix in seasonings & bread crumbs & egg mostly to stretch the meat more, but my husband is a “meaty purist”…he even eyeballs me suspiciously when i add salt & pepper to the meat!! (& I don’t have a very good relationship with the grill so there’s no sneaking it in, as he sees it while he’s grilling. oh well.)

MMMM…burgers. We make ours from scratch with local beef as well. SO GOOD.

I’m really sorry I wasn’t home yesterday when you called to invite me for supper, ;) because the burgers look positively delicious!

Hey that’s not fair….where was our invite?
Looking good, the photo’s are top notch, and the directions very straight forward.
Any nudging to suggest the recipe for the bread too? The buns looked delish!

@peggy-lynn, this is the recipe that Dave and Hayley use to make bread. It is from Artisan bread in 5 minutes a day.

Wow Kim, yum! You’re really turning into a “Susie”!! Man this looks good. I just might have to give it a try one night. (Gotta get me some of your dad’s beef too – probably the BEST beef on the planet!!)

Looks absolutely delicious. I might be making those for dinner tonight so impressed am I with yours.

Kim Becker · September 16, 2010 at 7:49 am

Thanks Pauline! They were very good. We eat them a LOT, it helps that we get free meat.

this is how we make ours! so yummy! we actually were thinking of having a cow processed this year! healthier, cheaper etc. is there a huge taste difference? wont bother me but I wonder if the kids would adjust quickly? id loove the recipe to your buns! (haha)

    MommyKnows · September 20, 2010 at 9:00 pm

@jenn, I think the kids would adjust. I bet they might not even notice. My kids don’t notice if I buy the store beef. I can tell, in fat content especially.

Lol, I know the feeling! Also very impressed that you made the buns yourself – I must admit that I use shop bought ones!

Great recipe – many thanks.
