Chapter Fourteen

Bridget would never admit it, but she was worried without Lane. She had no idea, what was going on, or where she was supposed to go. He could have warned her that she was going to be on her own. She didn’t like it one bit.

She was ushered with her luggage to a security area that was very reminiscent of the airport. Her bags and shoes went through a scanner, while she walked through a metal detector that of course detected the under-wire of her bra. It’s the kind of thing that is abhorred by big breasted women worldwide. A beeping, flashing wand being circled slowly around your breasts, the same breasts you’ve tried to take great lengths to camouflage and minimize. Thanks guys!

After an exhaustive search of her luggage, including an explosives swab taken from her laptop, Bridget was finally free of the security entrance area, but now what? She’d been counting on Lane to lead the way through the station. Was she supposed to see the Chief? Wait here for Lane? She decided she’d wait and sat down on bench near a bank of vending machines and dug her iPhone out of her bag. She figured she may as well check her email while she waited.

“I’m sorry ma’am, but you won’t be able to use your mobile in this area, it’s prohibited,” a young officer informed her. “If you need to make a call, there is a courtesy phone at the end of the corridor on the left.”

“Sorry, I didn’t know. I don’t need to make a phone call. I was just going to check my email. I’m waiting for a friend.” She was blabbering on and she knew it. Lane wasn’t exactly a friend. She wasn’t sure why she’d said that. “Detective Johnson I mean, I thought he was going to meet me in here.”

“I’m sorry ma’am, I don’t know anything about that …”

The young officer was cut off by the opening of elevator doors immediately to his right. Lane stepped out and smiled when he saw her. “Hey, that was fast, I didn’t think you’d be out of security this quickly. Let’s head up and see the Chief.”

Bridget was surprised at the relief she felt when Lane walked off of the elevator. Not just any relief but complete and utter bone liquefying relief. She leaned forward, with her elbows on her knees and buried her face in her hands. She fought back tears. “I need a minute.”
Lane sat down on the bench beside her, “What’s wrong Bridget? Did something happen in security?”

“Nothing’s wrong. I am fine now. Security was fine, well fine if you don’t count the boob-scan.” Bridget laughed a little and proceeded to explain the whole security issue to Lane.

“Is it the boob scan that’s got you upset?” Lane asked. “Or is there something else?”
“I don’t care about the boob-scan. It’s not the first time and it won’t be the last. You didn’t tell me I’d be getting here alone.”

“Bridget, it was just a few minutes, and I’m here now,” Lane soothed. “I’m sorry it didn’t even cross my mind that you’d be worried when you got here.” He rubbed her upper back in slow circular strokes.

“Well I was worried, I am worried. How can I not be? I don’t know what’s happening, where I’m going, for how long or with whom.” Bridget raised her hands in question and then let them drop in despair.

“We’re going to go up and see the Chief and he’s going to help fill in all of those blanks for us, okay?” Lane responded. “I’m here with you now, and I plan on seeing it through until we figure out what the heck is going on and why.”

Bridget nodded and gave Lane a weak smile. She hoped he didn’t mean, until the Chief filled them in on what and why, but until the whole unbelievable mess was over. She wasn’t going to ask him though, she figured she used up her daily allotment of helpless and pathetic.

“Okay, good girl, let’s get going the boss is waiting.” He stood and offered her a hand up. Then he bent to pick up her duffel bag and her massively heavy pink purse. “I’ll take this stuff for you; you wheel the other suitcase, okay?”

Bridget smiled and followed him to the same elevator he’d arrived in.

“I hope you appreciate this,” he said and nodded his head indicate the pink purse he’d slung over his right shoulder. “This whole purse thing is being monitored on cctv. I’ll never hear the end of this pink purse.”

Ohmyword, did you totally know I was composing a sassy wall comment in my head to tell you WE NEED THE FOURTEEN?! You’re psychic, in addition to your myriad other talents :)

I love Lane to the Rescue! And also the closed circuit tv :)

(I woke up this morning thinking I had something to do, and it was making me crazy that I couldn’t remember what it was. I started giggling when I remembered it was “read chapter 14”!)

@Antof9 –> Thank you! What would I do without you? I don’t even want to think about it! REALLY!

Well I’m disappointed, because I can only find 14 chapters! I wish I could read the rest of it. :)
