Lest We Forget (coffee contest continues)

Today is Remembrance Day — a day to honour Canada’s veterans both past and present (and veterans around the world).

On Friday, Sam and Lizzy’s school held an early Remembrance Day ceremony to commemorate the day. Lizzy was up early to have her cadet uniform ironed and her hair done.

Cadet Lizzy
She was so proud that she could wear her Navy League Cadet uniform to school on this important day. She’s worn her poppy faithfully since late October.

Every Canadian child learns ‘In Flanders Fields’. One of the most popular and powerful poems every written about World War I. I’ll leave you with that today.

In Flanders Fields

By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918) Canadian Army

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I’ll be doing my NaBloPoMo thingy all during the holiday. I’ll also be twittering the road trip away –> follow me on twitter @ http://twitter.com/mommyknows.

All comments and back-links for this post will be entered to win a $10 Starbucks Gift Card (includes shipping and handling) in my ‘Have a Coffee on Me’ Contest. If you comment and blog about the contest you’ll receive two entries (too easy). I have a whole ‘schwack’ of Gift Cards to give away, so make sure and come back often for a chance to ‘have a coffee on me’.

Awe Lizzy, you are one beautiful girl. I’m proud of you!

I love that poem! Lizzy looks very grown up in her Navy League Cadet uniform! That is super how the schools celebrate. My 90 year old dad is a veteran of
WWII. Thanks for reminding me of the poem and sharing your lovely daughter’s photo. Cindi :)

You must be so proud. She looks great in her uniform. Its wonderful to know that the younger generations “remember”.

That is a photo to treasure. On veterans day I honour my grandfather, who lost his hearing in the war, and the sacrifices of all our Canadian soldiers and their families. It is important to remember. Thank you for speaking about it on your blog, and for sharing In Flanders Fields.

Aw your daughter looks so cute and very proud to be wearing her uniform. It´s also Rememberance Day in the UK on 11.11, so I wore my poppy for a good few weeks as well. It is nice to see people who care. I always feel proud when I walk past an older person and they notice my poppy. It makes me feel like I´m doing my bit now, even though I wasn´t there to help at the time.

STARBUCKS GIVEAWAY! Woohoo!!! Keeping my fingers crossed… I could do with a nice creamy hot chocolate pretty soon!!

i wish kids here in the us had to remember our vets like that…i tried to have a really nice dinner ready for my mr. hubby last night to honor his service in the military…the FREAKIN’ slow cooker wasn’t turned on so my feast was wrecked! we celebrated at our local pub instead! guess it was the thought that counted!!

What a cute girl. Also very commendable the way she is acting, showing the sense of responsability she is developing and will be part of her personality in the future.

She is really cute,, and I really like the poem.. it reminds me of my love ones.

It thrills me that your daughter proudly wears the poppy. I get concerned that the meaning and celebration of Remembrance Day will disappear as the next generations come and the veterans pass away.
