Journey to Wellness –> We’re on One. Are You?

Published by on

Have you checked out the QuakerJourney.ca blog? If not you really should! I love the concept and it’s loads of fun to read about a regular mom and her family making healthy lifestyle changes.

Quaker invited Lynn from www.walkingwithsissors.com to record her family’s journey to wellness as they implement food, activity and lifestyle challenges.

It’s something we’ve been trying to do in Mommyknowsville for quite some time. I’ve always insisted on a family meal at supper time, but for a while we were in the habit of eating a LOT of fast food, or ‘heat and eat’ style meals. Not because I actually enjoyed eating them, but because I didn’t have to cook! I’m rather lazy, but you knew that already …

Things have changed drastically over the past couple of years, and we now eat home cooked meals 99% of the time. They taste better, they are better for us and it’s way easier on the bank balance.

About a year ago, I really started caring more about the quality of food that we eat and I’ve made several changes to try and incorporate more organic produce (I have it delivered every week — I love it) and try and ensure that about 85% of the food we eat is made from scratch. I like to call it ‘Real Food’ :) I even tried growing a garden last summer. It was a minor success, but I definitely have the bug and learned some great lessons about gardening. Our 2011 crop is going to bountiful.

It’s probably obvious to you by now that we’ve been doing a pretty good job getting the healthy eating under control.

I’m a different story when it comes to regular exercise. I’m pretty good in the summer, and do a fair amount of walking, biking and hiking; even a bit of rock climbing (which is a feat for a forty-something chubbo with MS, dontcha think?).

Then winter rolls around and I find it way more difficult to keep up the regular exercise. I do walk about 1.5 km each day taking Georgia to school, but it’s a slow pace. I like to ski, but can’t afford to do it as much as I’d like. I hate exercise for the sake of exercise. I don’t mind walking to the store for groceries, but hate to spend forty-five minutes on a treadmill (just the word treadmill has negative connotations for me).

Mr. MK is much fitter than I am, but just as sedentary in the winter (and he smokes, which makes me crazy, but that’s a whole other post!). The children are all extremely active and ski at least seven hours per week (the oldest up to twenty-two hours).

The point is I need to get moving and I am going to challenge myself to 3 hours of moderate exercise per week. I shall keep you posted!

If you could work on one aspect of wellness, what would it be?

One aspect of wellness for my family would have to be working out and eating healthier.
My fiance used to work out for a time, but stopped due to the amount of hours he works. He did smoke when I met him up until his uncle passed away due to cancer, as he was a smoker. I was so proud of him when he finally quit. He had been smoking for around 10 years!
We do make dinners nightly, but sometimes they aren’t the healthiest dishes.
I would also like to find a way to eat earlier and have the fiance stop eating 9 o’clock snacks.

ugh exercise. I’d rather do fun things like dancing, biking or walking than to exercise.

One thing I’d love for my family is to get on a better eating schedule. We sometimes don’t eat lunch till 2 or 3 in the afternoons and then dinner around 8 or 9 at night. Way too late at night for a meal.

Thanks for a great article! My family are not good at eating the fruit and veg in general eventhough we really try to be disciplined about it. But I’ve come across a really great solution, we simply juice everthing now! From carrots to apples, to spinach! It really is awesome because with only one cup of juice a day you get everything you need!

congratulations! I’m impressed with this! is amazing how you’re able to keep your family healthy and how you are concerned about your well being! I think you are doing and excellent job and remember that a healthy kid is a happy kid and a happy kid is in the future a good member of society.

Well that will also help with a future healthy workforce which means reduced health care costs, better productivity, and less absenteeism. Annual health care costs are 49 percent lower for individuals who are non-smokers, non-obese, and who participate in physical activity three days per week

I’m also a very lazy person, but I in no way eat any junk or fast food, I don’t know how to cook that’s why I eat just fresh uncooked fruits and vegetables and feel great!
