DIY – How to Make a Pet Rock – Great Rainy Day Activity

Published by on

Rain, rain go away …

So far, we haven’t had much of a summer. Georgia and I kept busy for a couple of hours today making pet rocks.

Here we have a ‘mom-made’ panda on the left and a ‘kid-made’ panda on the right.

Sam
Lizzy and Sam came home and joined in the fun.

We ended up with an entire zoo of pet rocks.

How-to:

You’ll need:

Rocks
Acrylic paints
Paint brushes
Glue (I used –> Aleene’s Tacky Glue )
Various other craft supplies (your choice, but may include –> pom-poms, felt, googly-eyes, feathers, buttons, coloured paper, sequins, glitter …)

pet rock supplies

I highly recommend waiting for paint to dry before adding additional coats, however, my children didn’t find this necessary.

wolf and fox
The two in the middle are a wolf and a fox.

My creation
I was nearly as bad as the kids making several creations.

Have FUN!

Cute! I don’t do nearly enough craft projects with my kids. I think I’m just not creative enough. But this is a great idea and looks fairly easy to do. We’ll have to try this on our next rainy day.

This is really a good bonding activity. I remember this convention I attended, I’m not sure whether it was Easter that time but the we had eggs painted and afterwards displayed in a kids exhibition. We really had fun. This was somewhat similar with the eggs just less cracks.

So adorable. I have a whole shelf at work devoted to the little rock ‘creatures’ that me, my son and my husband have created. Some of the rocks from when he was younger look a little more ‘abstract’ lol but I love them! So happy you posted this!

So cute! I’ve done this with my boys and they loved it. I need to buy more googley eyes for future craft projects.

We made these at our kids pre-school and they were such a hit. I thought the kids would not get it. But they just had a blast doing the project and creating a story about the history of there pet.
