These two little words can make me crazy: I’m hungry

What do you mean you’re bloody hungry? You just ate 10 minutes ago.

Honestly, ALL three of the younger kids would eat non-stop if I let them. Sam and Georgia can be pacified with something healthy like apple or carrots or cheese or yogurt. Lizzy generally wants sweets of some kind (it makes me even crazier).

The hour or so before supper is very painful for Georgia. I cut off all snacking (whether healthy or not). She has to go a whole 60 minutes without food, and every 5 minutes she is asking if supper is ready.

Waiting for supper
Lately, she’s started pulling up a chair to watch supper cook. She doesn’t make it easy on herself. This is what I’d call, self inflicted pain!

All comments and back-links for this post will be entered to win a $10 Starbucks Gift Card (includes shipping and handling) in my ‘Have a Coffee on Me’ Contest. If you comment and blog about the contest you’ll receive two entries (too easy). I have a whole ‘schwack’ of Gift Cards to give away, so make sure and come back often for a chance to ‘have a coffee on me’.

how funny…my daughter does the same thing…she sits at her chair and table in the kitchen asking for a chance to try the meal as I cook it…just to make sure it is ok:) I think she learned that from her dad:)

I honestly thought my kids were the only ones that did that, lol. Cutting snacks off an hour before dinner is a great idea. I have not figured out how to deal with it yet. Please post any new ideas you have. I have four kids and have ran out of ways to deal with the I’m Hungry routine.

Zoe is exactly the same way. She’d snack non-stop all day long if allowed.

I feel your pain. Mine seem to eat all day long. It drives me crazy. I can’t wait until they are teenage boys and can really put away the food. haha

Safire · September 20, 2008 at 12:02 pm

We only allow veggies as snack before dinner. That way I know they are healthy and if she fills up on that, I don’t mind. :)

Boy, can I identify with you! I thought the eating binges might slow down after school started. They come home hungry. Okay, eat a snack. Later, have you started dinner, yet?! What are we having. I am soooooo hungry! This is when my mom would have told me about all the starving children in China. Now, I stay all over the world! Cindi

I’ve really tried to cut down on the snacking before meals too, but it’s torture for a 2yo. LOL

So happy to be checking out your site, especially this post because OMG this is my house as well from the time we get home until bedtime My kids will have had 3 helpings and we clean up, and they turn to me and say “I’m hungry”. We tried everything. Usually, what works best is to get my son involved in the dinner process so now, I ask him to set the table. He loves setting out the napkins and forks and it wastes some time while I finish up dinner.

BTW, totally psyched about the coffee card contest. Count me in!

My son is exactly the same…he’s ravenous after school and every five minutes, it’s “Mama, when’s dinner?” If I let him help, dinner takes a little longer, but he’s happy that he has something to do with the process.

Thanks for visiting my blog! Count me in for the coffee card contest.

Georgia is so cute, sitting there watching dinner cook!
My kids LOVE to snack (healthy or unhealthy, it doesn’t matter) but could take or leave dinner. It makes me laugh. They complain of being “soooo hungry” 30 minutes after eating their after-school snack (which is a pretty generous one!) but then at dinner, they take ages to eat. I think both my boys are “grazers”!

I feel her pain – I always hated waiting for dinner! Now that I cook for myself, I have a better idea when it will actually be ready, and don’t feel bad about snacking if I am getting too hungry.

One thing my mom did often which helped was, if we were having some type of green or fruit salad, she would offer that to us first. Then we were actually eating part of our dinner, but had something to snack on while we were waiting for the rest to be ready. =)

While I’m commenting on this post my son goes (and is still going),”mom, can I have a snack, I’m so hungry…”. He could just snack all day and then still have dinner. I wish it would work like that for me!
