Family Travel (coffee contest continues)

We’re in St. George, Utah tonight. As always, we’re several hours behind schedule. This time it’s because, I stopped to shop at outlet malls NOT tire troubles. The kids seemed to enjoy a lazy day on the road. They spent most all of the time watching movies and playing DS.

Somewhere in NV ...
I took this photo of Lizzy about an hour ago. She was watching the Parent Trap (so was Sam). It struck me how different travel is now. For starters everyone is buckled into a comfy seat. Separate sound systems allow movies for the kids and music for Mr. MK and I. The only music we had as kids was our own singing and the only time we were buckled up was after a game of ‘punch-buggy’ got out of hand and ended up in a fist fight, then we’d be buckled in our own side of the backseat to keep us apart … NOT safe. Ah, the good ole days.

Did you take many family road trips as a kid?

I’ll be doing my NaBloPoMo thingy all during the holiday. I’ll also be twittering the road trip away –> follow me on twitter @ http://twitter.com/mommyknows.

All comments and back-links for this post will be entered to win a $10 Starbucks Gift Card (includes shipping and handling) in my ‘Have a Coffee on Me’ Contest. If you comment and blog about the contest you’ll receive two entries (too easy). I have a whole ‘schwack’ of Gift Cards to give away, so make sure and come back often for a chance to ‘have a coffee on me’.

yes we did and we were in the back of a truck with a camper shell, it was carpeted but no seats. We loved going around corners because we would roll around. Talk about not safe!!

We didn’t take too many road trips when I was little. Hawaii is not a big road trip kind of place!

Sounds like you guys had a wonderful time!

Traveling is very different for my kids, than when I was a kid. And we traveled a lot! All our family was 8 hours away. We made that trip several times a year….. in all kinds of weather. Usually, my mom dictated what music we listened to……. blech! It was so nice when I hit my teens and finally had a walkman of my own. No more Mario Lanza or CBC! ;)

I remember having lots of road trips as a kid. It was always a treat to lay the van seat back and have a huge bed. We also used to play fort in the back, crawling under the seat (as it was folded) and putting up blankets through the windows. My mom never complained about the lack of visablity. I think she was just happy we weren’t killing each other!

Hi, Traveling has changed, even from when our two sons were Georgia’s age!
I took many road trips with my older sister’s family. It was like you said, our own singing and “Slug Bug!” Cindi

I hope you have found lots of bargains at the outlet mall. We only took a couple of road trips when I was younger, and they were fairly short, so we
didn’t get too tired of each other.

thanks for sharing your trip.

We took lots of road trips in an old volkswagen van. I loved those trips even when it was stinking hot in that old thing. We went all the way down to California, all the way across Canada, every summer it was a different trip! Lots of fun!

My husband and I had a discussion about old skool road trips not too long ago and how much the “safety standards” had changed. My parents would push down the seat in the old Plymouth Volare, throw pillows, blankets, games and books back there and would let us (5 children) do whatever–as long as we didn’t scream or fight. (Dad has a low tolerance for high volumes). Crazy is all I can say. Nowadays, as you describe, the road trip is MUCH safer and individualistic. I don’t know how we would manage without our portable DVD player and Disney!

She looks like a zombie, so sad… Hope you get out into nature so she can be human soon.

We took day trips often – 5 kids and my dad packed into a Volkswagon Beetle!! We kids fought over who got the “hump” in the middle in the back because when the car turned a corner you could get tossed around a bit if you were on the hump. It was fun!

The food in Phuket is yummy and cheap, all the Thais we met were very friendly and anxious to help. We stayed at Bann Thai Resort and Spa- a completely different place to the busy tourist trap in the east of Phuket City.
