A New Camera (and a new contest)

Published by on

Winner is: Amy from Texas – Amy please email me: kim (@) mommyknows (dot) com

I have a new camera. Maybe, I should call it a new obsession. All I’ve been doing is taking photos, then editing/processing photos.

Now that I have ‘retired’ I have decided to further pursue my photography hobby. I packed away my old Nikon D70 and treated myself to a Nikon D300. It’s way, way, way too much camera for this mommy. Nevertheless, I am determined to figure out how this one works.

I took several pictures of the kids yesterday. This is my favourite of Sam:
Sam in Colour
Here is the same photo in black and white:
Sam in B&W
It’s amazing really the how different they seem. In this version of black and white you see his freckles better; and it’s seems to have been taken in another time and place. I can’t decide, which I prefer. How about you, black and white or colour?

If you have the time, give it a try. I would love to see your efforts (make sure to leave a link in the comments section).

All comments and back-links for this post will be entered to win a $10 Starbucks Gift Card (includes shipping and handling). If you comment and blog about the contest you’ll receive two entries (too easy). I have a whole ‘schwack’ of Gift Cards to give away, so make sure and come back often for a chance to ‘have a coffee on me’.

I like the color version because your kids have gorgeous coloring but he looks like Steve McQueen in the black and white, which is pretty cool… I can’t believe how grown up he looks! It seems like you just cut off his little boy curls not too long ago.

I need to get a good camera one of these days, something that’s not just a point and shoot.

I Love the black and white one:)

Hannah · August 17, 2008 at 8:27 pm

They are both great, but I like the B&W one because I’m a real sucker for freckles!! My youngest is getting some and I can’t get enough of them ;-)

I like the color one because of the dappled green background against the blonde hair, fair skin and white tank, but the b&w makes his eyes even more intense and sets off the freckles… I think you’re a fab photographer, can’t wait to see what you do with your new toy!

@ Naomi – Funny you say Steve McQueen my dad gets that ALL the time. I actually thought I saw Ricky Schroeder in the b&w. You MUST get a good camera, there is so much you miss with a p&s, it’s worth it, just for the shutter speed.

@ Lisa – Thank you.

@ Hannah – Thank you Hannah. I am a sucker for freckles too.

@ Michelle – Thanks Michelle. I think you are a fab crafter :).

@ Leslie – Thanks Leslie. I am using Lightroom and Photoshop. Lightroom is new to me. I am about a 1/3 of the way through the tutorials. MUST finish.

I think I like the b&w better. Not sure why. Congrats on the new camera!

Congratulations! I just upgraded myself!

I love black and white photos. I think it says something about the photo/subject that you cant see in the color.

Happy Monday! I vote for the black and white photo of your son. Sometimes, the difference between color and black and white photos, is the pose. This pose requires the black and white finish. You are a wonderful photographer. Cindi

I actually love both…colour is so great in pics of kids I find, but his little freckles sell me on the black and white one! Here’s my attempt, although I’m not the happiest with the result: http://theheeremas.blogspot.com/2008/08/just-tinkering-here-bit.html

I love the B&W. Seems a bit more intense or more intriguing. I would love to get a new camera. Might be my next big purchase.

By the way, thank you for the great bag. I’ve used it several times since I received it. No more plastic bags for me.

I am so anxious to get my hands on the Nikon D300 I can taste it. I had the Nikon D100 and I loved it. I sold it and put the money away so I could save for the D300. Can’t wait to get it. I’ll be stopping by to see your great photos!

I am definitely feeling the freckles so I love the B&W! You should layer the b&w over the color for the vintage feel. I wish I could afford a new lens for my camera – not that I don’t enjoy what I have!

I prefer the color one as I’m not too sure about the shading(?) on the black and white…. yes, you’re very right, certain details do show up more.

I’m a returning student, ha! I’ll be 40 when I graduate, and this coming semester I’ve tacked on a photography course. Once you pay for 12 credit hours, the rest are “free” so photography will be credit hours 15, 16 and 17 for me. I thrive on being busy and I look forward to learning everything I can about photography.

linda · August 19, 2008 at 6:15 pm

I love both actually …well done .

hotep · August 20, 2008 at 4:12 am

Black & white photos are always my favorite …but sometimes the color ones are best. Here the secound one shows best the face features.

Susy-Q · August 20, 2008 at 6:14 am

Black and White for sure! His eyes and freckles stand out more and the photo just seems for intense. You wouldn’t be interested in selling your old camera by any chance would you?

Amy from Texas · August 20, 2008 at 6:16 am

The black and white is my fav. Look at how his eyes pop. What a cutie! Enjoy the new camera… I’m jealous!

It is amazing how the digital camera has completely revolutionized how people take photographs. When I was younger I used to develop my own black and white pictures, but could never get anything that looks half as good as your picture. I just could never get that kind of crispness or contrast. I still have all the equipment though and am a good deal wiser now, so I would like to get back into it.

I agree with Amy that the black and white one is my favorite.

Ashley · August 20, 2008 at 8:05 am

The black and white is definately my top pick. It’s just a little more dramatic and his features stand out!

Gill · August 20, 2008 at 12:07 pm

Its funny but since I started my blog I have taken an interest in photography too. I think its because there are so many good photographers out there in blog world, and when I look at my poor photo’s it makes me want to try new techniques and want to take better photo’.

I was interested also in how your black and white brought out the freckles, who knew that would happen? I am a fan of the black and white one too.

Now to save up for a new camera…….

I love the B&W one…his eyes are amazing and freckles stand out more.I think the B& W one “says” more than the color. It’s funny that people are commenting on the Steve McQueen thing…just like we used to say about your dad.

In my opinion Nikon has the best cameras on the market. No wonder why the CSI show uses them in their cases. Good pictures though.
