About a month ago, we started having troubles with our stove. The elements for the burners worked intermittently. Usually a jiggle or nudge to the element would fix the problem and cooking would commence. Then one night after dinner, while I wiping down the stove, I was electocuted. BIG time electrocuted, the electricity went up one arm and down the other. I grabbed the counter top to catch my balance and the finger that touched the counter first was burnt and blistered. It was painful and scary and the arch of electricity actually was powerful enough (and hot enough) to sodder the metal element to the edge of the burner, virtually instantaneously. I could smell fire and burning and could ‘taste’ electricity in my mouth. OH yeah, and FLAMES … a 6″ flame shot out of the burner area.
Needless to say, we unplugged the stove and I refused to go near it. I then started calling Electrolux the maker of our Kelvinator Stove/Range for assistance. I have called repeatly … NOTHING (Electrolux, if you read this … our stove was only 5/6 years old, it is unusable (dangerous) and it electrocuted me – you need to respond to my calls).
Mr. MommyKnows decided Saturday, after a full month of “NO” cooking in our house, it had to end and went out and purchased a new stove, fridge (they should match right?) and a big screen TV (his birthday gift from me). I find kitchen appliances (and TV’s) totally boring and was intent on making Electrolux send me a new one, so I didn’t go shopping, I could careless as long as they work, we can afford them and I am not Electrocuted during maintenance. AND I was sort of enjoying the no cooking (I hate cooking).
As we adults worked to get all of our new appliances set-up and running, the kids decided to build a fort outside using the HUGE boxes the stove and TV arrived in. I vaguely remember, giving my “OK” to a request for a steak knife! Bad move …
Lots of blood accompanied … A LOT of screaming.
Sam ran in the back door crying the ‘really hurt’ cry (you know versus, the ‘not really hurt cry’) and Lizzy was right behind him hollering, “SAM’S HURT. SAM’S HURT”! I felt sick … I yelled at Mr. MommyKnows, “OH GOD, the STEAK KNIFE … YOU DO IT! YOU DO IT!”
So he did, letting me know right away it wasn’t too bad, but there was blood everywhere! I didn’t quite believe him (about it being not so bad), there was a LOT of blood –> it was up the back stairs, down the hall way (floors and walls), in two of the bedrooms and of course all over the bathroom (floors, sink, door, mirrors). Sam, after cutting the tip of his finger (pretty small cut) did the ‘I hit my finger with a hammer shake’ with his hand and shook blood everywhere!
Once Mr. MommyKnows assured me it was safe to look, I tiptoed my way through the bloody mess (with my camera), unlike Georgia who smeared the ‘juice’ around with her white socks.
He was doing pretty good. He originally put the bleeding digit in his mouth … so there was blood there too!
I decided I should take a real close look. Oooo … it looked pretty deep, I wondered out loud if we should take him for stitches.
“Sorry Sam, I didn’t mean to make you cry, let’s put pressure on it for a while longer, maybe it’ll quit bleeding and we can fix it up, right here at home”.
“Really, NO stitches?” says Sam, that made him feel a bit better.
Once it finally stopped bleeding, Mr. MommyKnows fixed Sam up … “It hardly hurt”, he said.

OMG that last photo just cracked me up! Especially when my mouse hovered over it and I read “Hey Electrolux!” … ROFL!!
But seriously, I am very sorry that Sam cut himself, and that you were electrocuted by your oven 1 month ago. My oven is about 100 years old and I swear I don’t want a new one! I think mine will last longer than all the new ones put together ;-) It doesn’t look stylish, but it does the job and it doesn’t electrocute me!

Yikes, glad to hear that Sam is okay though. If you don’t hear back from Electrolux feel free to call the trouble shooters (cfrn news I think….could be another station I can’t remember). I’m sure they could get it straightened out. If not here’s a link to the Canadian consumer relations website thingy: http://tinyurl.com/ywwjhh . I’m sure they’d love to hear about an electrocuting stove.

Wow! What a day! Yikes, all that blood on the floor, and every where else, makes me tired just thinking of the clean up! Glad Sam is doing better… so quickly! / Don’t you hate “customer service”? :-P Blaaaa! I hope they do give you a new stove, but I know that even if the do, it will not replace the pain/ trouble you went through!!! :-P

my heart would have jumped out of my throat! yikes! I am glad it wasnt too deep and I am sorry to hear you got zapped by your stove pretty badly! how scary! I wouldnt cook either!

I remember helping my mom peel potatoes at that age and peeling skin off the same finger. I thought it was great fun showing off my stitches the same way.

So glad he’s OK, it’s amazing how even small cuts can bleed and bleed and bleed! Your stove story has made me rather wary now, I didn’t know that they could do that! Yikes! Oh and you really are a good mrs. Mommyknows to get mr. MK a big screen TV for his birthday! I am right there with you on the appliance shopping however, just get me something that works, I don’t really care beyond that!

As far as Sam’s cut – I can’t believe you thought to get the camera out! I’m always forgetting about taking pictures until it’s too late, I’ve missed quite a few camera-worthy moments!

LOL! Great end to your blog! Very appropriate for Eletrolux! I am sorry for your son but he looked much better on the last photo. And speaking of your stove, that is 220 electricity running through it. You’re lucky nothing more serious happened or that it was one of your children. Now I guess you’re back to cooking?

Fingertip cuts are sumthin’ huh?
I once cut the tip of my thumb off (just a little bit – don’t ask!), and 1) the blood! 2) the crazy pain! and 3) I actually experienced symptoms of shock, which is nuts for such a small wound. I was dizzy, nausea and panicky… and I’m usually a grace-under-fire kind of person.

We have a light switch in our house that you used to give you shocks. It was a metal plated switch. Not sure if that is why or not but it would zap you every once in a while. Not fun getting electrocuted.

Yes, we have a metal plated switch cover in our bathroom… and I went to turn on the light once… and ZAP!!! Thankfully I’ve only got zapped once!

That last photo is just too much! Ha! But the sight of blood drops on the floor made me a bit queasy….
Our stove and oven unit is dying. It came with the house, which is almost 30 years old, so I guess it had a good run. Suppose I’ll be shopping for a new appliance soon too….

Yikes! I hope your little ones are ok! That certainly is scary. I remember when a similar thing happened with my children. They built a fort near some tools and such out in the back yard and with all their horseplay the tools and two pipes came tumbling down. My youngest who was just over 1 ½ at the time got cut pretty bad. He got blood all over his baby clothes and screamed for hours.
My other son who was 3 at the time also got hurt but his wounds where less severe and only got some scrapes and some small cuts. The oldest who was 6 then was the culprit and through shaking the fort from side to side he caused it to bump into the wall that was holding everything up and then caused it all to come flying down.
I was pretty scared at first but I got the bleeding to stop and patched all three kids up. They were still pretty shaken though so I promised them I’d take them out and by them some trendy toddler clothing, designer baby clothes, and for the oldest, a new toy. This seemed to help them out quite a bit. I hope all is well now with your kids.

How is Sam’s finger doing today? Is he still taking great pleasure out of his temporarily finger pointing allowance? I hope everything is healing quickly! When I first started my working career I nearly cut off my index finger on my right hand. It was brutal. I still don’t have feeling in that finger.
