Books – Suggestions Please

Published by on

I love to read! Lately, I haven’t had much time … but I do have this book on the go:

‘Faith’ by Lesley Pearse.

I started reading this author last summer. I have now read and own every single one of her novels. I wish there were more, now I have to patiently wait for each new book to come out.

I started reading Lesley Pearse, after I ran out of Maureen Lee.

Has anyone else read any of these two authors? If so do you know of any similar books for me to read?

Tell me what you are reading right now and your all time favorite read. Tell me what they are about … I might want to read them too.

My favorite read is Douglas Coupland. He’s amazing. My favorite book is All Families are Psychotic. I find his books to be exceptionally funny… even my husband laughs when he picks them up… and its neat the he writes about Vancouver. I know a lot of landmarks he writes about. I enjoyed reading Atonement, Swimming and Middlesex as well. Don’t have writers names handy at this exact moment but an grab them later.

I’m trying to nurse a poor little mouse back to health. Its eyes aren’t open yet and I’m feeding it by dropper.

I haven’t read either of your authors. I recently read “Plain Truth” by Jodi Piccoult (I think that is the way her name is written). She has lots of other books that sound interesting as well. Also just read “Those who Save Us” which was a great book that I had trouble putting down!

But my all time favorite is Minette Walters. She writes mysteries which are just amazing.

I’m currently reading Eclipse from the Stephenie Meyer Twilight series. I felt compelled to read the three books due to the craze over it by my sisters and friends. So far, I’m rating them at okay.

Books that I’ve really liked: The Poisonwood Bible and The Secret Life of Bees

Great post idea! I love to read too, would love some new suggestions! My recent favourites are the “Shopoholic” series….mindless, and quite humourous!!

I ran into Georgia today, had to ask the girl with her if it was her – I was pretty sure – can’t mistake the hair and “Apeman” shirt for very many other little girls :) What a cutie pie, great place to burn off energy!!

My all time favorite book is a children’s book “Just David” written by Eleanor Porter who also wrote Pollyanna. It is read aloud at least once a year at our house. Just delightful! I love to read biographies and some of my favorites are “Jack and Rochelle: A Holocaust Story of Love and Resistance” by Jack Sutin and “Life and Death in Shanghai” by Nein Cheng.

I can’t believe I forgot to mention Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. If you ever need a pick me up, or to have the human spirit re-affirmed then this is the book to read. It left me feeling so good afterwards. The children faced so much adversity growing up, but survived through it all.

I havent read those and when I do get a chance to read I am reading the Yada Yada Prayer Group by Neta Jackson..I am in the 2nd book and like them alot :)

I haven’t had a chance to read for pleasure in several years (between college work and a baby). I really enjoy reading Danielle Steele when I find the opportunity – I know, very mainstream! But easy to read and you kind of know what you will get… which sometimes I appreciate.

Carey · January 9, 2008 at 7:02 am

I havent read any books by those authors. But i have a read a book from Francine Rivers called The Scarlet Thread. It was an amazing book, i would definitely recommend it. I want to read Redeeming Love by Rivers next.

Kristian · January 9, 2008 at 7:18 am

Try “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert. Its a fantastic book, the kind that makes you laugh while your crying.

nikkapotamus · January 9, 2008 at 7:43 am

I just recently finished Fannie Flagg’s Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven. Very sweet, funny, sad book about an older eccentric lady who dies, goes to heaven and is brought back to life by her doctors and the chaos that ensues as the whole town believes her to be and is planning her funeral.

mama k · January 9, 2008 at 9:14 am

I really enjoy Pat Conroy. His books are older, but sooo complex and interesting.

Right now I’m reading the No Cry Discipline Solution. heh.

jw4mkc · January 9, 2008 at 10:02 am

My favorite it James Patterson. I am not currently reading his though, since they made his Women’s Murder Club a tv show – which I LOVE!!

Also.. probably the best book and the one that had the most influence on my life it “Let’s Roll” by Lisa Beamer. It is not a typical ‘I have been through a tragedy and someone offered me money for 15 min. of fame’ – She is an amazing woman and her outlook on the triumphs she has overcome changed my way of thinking, potentially changing my life in some manner. IT is an amazing book!

jw4mkc · January 9, 2008 at 10:06 am

OH..off the cuff.. Looking at Hayley’s site – So, are you and Mr. Mommyknows going to go to get her when her time is up? Maybe you could tell us about that or at least me. :)

Heather · January 9, 2008 at 10:42 am

I have never read either of the authors you mentioned. My favorites are Nicholas Sparks, Frank Peretti, and Beth Moore. All quite different. Nicholas Sparks’ most famous is probably “The Notebook,” which is a romantic story about a couple’s journey to marriage and their dedication to it despite the wife’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. Frank Peretti mostly writes about spiritual warfare and the like. Beth Moore’s writing is “dedicated to Biblical literacy and a commitment to guide believers to love and live on God’s Word.” I saw someone mention “Redeeming Love” by Francine Rivers in an earlier post and I thought that was an amazing book, too!

Naomi · January 9, 2008 at 11:34 am

I wish I had the time to read but Jasper is kind of a mommy hog. I used to read a lot while nursing Roo but her brother wants my undivided attention. Or else he flails so much, it’s not worth trying to read because inevitably he will kick the book away. Ugh.

When I did read, I liked Martin Amis’ novels.

Jamie · January 9, 2008 at 11:38 am

Read?? Who has time to read??

Actually, sometimes when I have a bath after the hooligans are all in bed, I pick up a book. I usually pick one up that I’ve read before tho, that way it doesn’t hurt so much when I have to put it down/lose it/etc…

My current favourites are the Yarn Harlot’s books right now. They make me giggle.

Kait · January 9, 2008 at 11:42 am

My favorite book was the Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. I also love Dan Brown’s books (like the Da Vinci Cod) and all the James Patterson books (especially the ones featuring Dr. Alex Cross). Actually, I’ll read just about anything. I am currently reading Bill Clinton’s book Giving.

Deb · January 9, 2008 at 1:22 pm

I used to read all the time. Now it’s so sporadic that it takes AGES for me to finish a book.

I am reading Raising Kids Who Turn Out Right, by Tim Kimmel. This is the 3rd book of his I’m reading. We need some help in the parenting department. :)

Cindi Hoppes · January 9, 2008 at 2:00 pm

Thanks for introducing me to the book you are reading! I like the book “Marley & Me” by John Grogan”. Cindi

Monique · January 9, 2008 at 3:03 pm

I used to read. Well, I still do, but with two kids I read books like Care Bears and Dr. Seuss :)

Amy · January 9, 2008 at 6:01 pm

I LOVE LOVE LOVE to read but I can’t say i’ve read either of those authors. I am currently reading “Over To You” by Roald Dahl but it’s a war time story book so not quite on that same level. I have heard great things about “The Memory Keeper’s Daughter” by Kim Edwards and “Midwives” by Chris Bohjalian. I have on my “up next” list “Water For Elephants: A Novel” by Sara Gruen and recently read “Jemima J: A Novel About Ugly Ducklings and Swans” by Jane Green which I loved. Hope that gives you some suggestions :)

lace · January 9, 2008 at 6:13 pm

One of my favorite topics! I have never read the authors you mentioned. I think I am going to have to now. I love WWII books.

Some favs of the past:

The Zion Covenant Series by Bodie & Brock Thoene (WWII books)

Inkheart, Inkspell by Cornelia Funke – (a younger read but still very good) This series has been made into a movie and will be out Easter weekend.

I agree with Heather – Redeeming Love is a good book

Also The Mark of the Lion series by Francine Rivers is good.

I also used to like reading Maeve Binchey books (she writes books that take place in Ireland. She wrote the Circle of Friends if you have ever heard of that movie/book)

currently reading – Return to Me by Robin Lee Hatcher – Its okay so far but I’m still only at the beginning of the book.

I could probably go on but I better not.

Auntie Gayle · January 9, 2008 at 6:49 pm

MK- you HAVE to read some of the Jodi Picoult books. All are good, but I just finished “My Sister’s Keeper” which was excellent. I also just read “The Memory Keeper’s Daughter” by Kim Edwards. Awesome story.Log on to http://www.shelfari.com and check out my bookshelf.I’m still working on adding more books.

Caryn B · January 9, 2008 at 11:31 pm

My little one (6 1/2 months old) is STILL not sleeping through the night so I just started reading The Sleepeasy Solution: The Exhausted Parent’s Guide to Getting Your Child to Sleep from Birth to Age 5. I don’t want to let my little one CIO so I’m hoping this works. They say it only takes a week…we’ll see! : )

Paige · January 10, 2008 at 9:10 am

I just finished Dangerous Admissions by Jane O’Conner, and I’m giving it away on my blog, in fact. Enter to win, if you are interested.

Alexia · January 10, 2008 at 10:26 am

I haven’t read books by either of those authors….now I’m gonna have to go look them up! I hate it when you have to wait for a new book, can’t they write faster?!?!

I just finished reading “Notes from the Underbelly” and “Tales from the Crib” by Risa Green…those were two funny books!

Crystal · January 10, 2008 at 12:25 pm

Looks like a great book, I’ll have to pick it up. Great blog.
The Time Traveler’s Wife was a wonderful story I just cant remember who wrote it.

Susy-Q · January 10, 2008 at 12:53 pm

Okay ladies, the ultimate ultimate BEST ever series is the one by Diana Gabaldon, starting with OUTLANDER. I love reading and read tons of books and this stuff is, for lack of a better word, really GREAT! Everyone, and I mean everyone, I have recommended these books to (even non-readers) have gotten seriously hooked. Be warned, once you start, you will be hooked, which means everything else in your life will suffer!

katie bowen · January 10, 2008 at 3:38 pm

Lacy · January 10, 2008 at 7:09 pm

I am always looking for a great new author and will add these books to my list. My last read was The Wednesday Letters by Jason Wright and it was great. A book that made me think long and hard about my own faith and forgiveness. I am now reading Anybody Out There by Marian Keyes and it’s a big book but an easy read and has kept me guessing. This is my first book by her and I plan to read more.

Andrea · January 10, 2008 at 10:15 pm

These do look like good books…I’ll definitely have to check ’em out!!

Cindi Hoppes · January 11, 2008 at 7:59 pm

I really enjoyed a book by John Grogan called
“Marley & Me!” It is the true story of his family
and him with their new puppy…..Cindi

I love to read, but I can be a little boring about branching out. I re-read and re-read my favourites which are by Douglas Coupland and Margaret Atwood (I didnt’ pick Canucks on purpose, just happened that way!) One of my favourite Coupland books is Microserfs, and my fav Atwood book is The Robber Bride. I like Wally Lamb’s I Know This Much is True.

Lately I have been reading a lot of non-fiction, which is unprecendented for me. I read BLINK and The Long Tail and The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog (to lazy to look up authors… sorry!) recently, and all were VERY good and very interesting. The Long Tail may interest you in particular because of your work!

I will try and restrain myself from going on… those are the highlights but I have a very large list of great books if you ever want to consult it!
