Goodbye NaBloPoMo

Posted on 30 November 2008 by MommyKnows

NaBloPoMo it’s been one hell of a month. I started the MS drugs. I traveled by car across a continent (2 countries, 1 province, 6 states) with 3 kids, survived 3 theme parks, 2 national parks and 2 flat tires. Fell way behind on the laundry. Held my head up high during Georgia’s fashion crisis. I am pretty sure the laundry and fashion crisis aren’t connected. Suffered a relapse (a very minor one) of my MS and still I didn’t forget about you.

It has to be said though, you’ve worn out your welcome. Your nagging presence is no longer wanted. Goodbye NaBloPoMo. Good riddance, don’t let the door hit you on the ass on the way out, or do, I don’t care.

Don’t call me, I’ll call you.

Family Travel (coffee contest continues)

Posted on 15 November 2008 by MommyKnows

Winner is: Maria P. —> email me @ kim (@) mommyknows (dot) com.

We’re in St. George, Utah tonight. As always, we’re several hours behind schedule. This time it’s because, I stopped to shop at outlet malls NOT tire troubles. The kids seemed to enjoy a lazy day on the road. They spent most all of the time watching movies and playing DS.

Somewhere in NV ...
I took this photo of Lizzy about an hour ago. She was watching the Parent Trap (so was Sam). It struck me how different travel is now. For starters everyone is buckled into a comfy seat. Separate sound systems allow movies for the kids and music for Mr. MK and I. The only music we had as kids was our own singing and the only time we were buckled up was after a game of ‘punch-buggy’ got out of hand and ended up in a fist fight, then we’d be buckled in our own side of the backseat to keep us apart … NOT safe. Ah, the good ole days.

Did you take many family road trips as a kid?

I’ll be doing my NaBloPoMo thingy all during the holiday. I’ll also be twittering the road trip away –> follow me on twitter @ http://twitter.com/mommyknows.

Road Trip Tire Blues (coffee contest continues)

Posted on 09 November 2008 by MommyKnows

Winner is: LucyJane —> email me @ kim (@) mommyknows (dot) com.

The trip has been good (mostly). The kids have been content to enjoy the scenery, watch movies, play DS and nap. I have one major rule: NO CRYING or CATERWAULING.

Everyone has followed ‘the rule’ to a tee. Well, Georgia has had one or two minor infractions, but really they were so short-lived they aren’t worthy of more than a mention. Oh fine, I’ve done a bit of caterwauling myself, but like Georgia’s it was minor.

About 50 miles north of Helena, MT we heard a HUGE ‘BOOM’. Mr. MK quickly pulled over and we discovered that the back passenger tire was REALLY, REALLY flat.

Road Trip Blues
Taken with my iphone.

I was happy to NOT be a man (generally, this is always true) while Mr. MK, was out in the rain/sleet kneeling in the mud of the soft shoulder fixing that tire. We spent several hours at the Helena Wal*Mart while a new set of back tires was put on the van. Off we drove, not too stressed, but several hundred $’s poorer and several hours behind schedule. On a more positive note, the kids enjoyed the toy department, lunch at Subway and they each had a new movie.

After seven more hours of uneventful driving and just 2 blocks from our hotel in SLC, the van started to shake and shimmy. Again, we pulled over. The same DAMN tire was flat, and for the second time in 12 hours poor Mr. MK was out fixing a flat. This time (it wasn’t raining and he was NOT happy) I helped out by holding up the back door of the van for him. Poor guy, he shouldn’t have to do everything! I also thought it was a bit too much of a coincidence that our brand new tire would be flat, due only to bad luck. While Mr. MK put on the spare, I inspected the ‘new’ flat tire and rim. Mr. MK found this VERY annoyoing (what would I know right?), but I did find a hole in the aluminium rim of the tire, and as it turns out, it is the culprit.

Mr. MK’s was out 7:30 this morning, Wal*Mart replaced the 10 hour old tire. They were in the middle of mounting it when Mr. MK pointed out my ‘rim puncture’. He had called me, to tell me the tire would be fixed shortly, I asked about the puncture, because I wanted to make sure it was safe. Once he pointed it out to them they confirmed it wasn’t safe. They then couldn’t or wouldn’t fix the tire/rim and proceeded to tell us how impossible it would be to do on a Sunday in SLC.

However, the lovely front desk clerk at Homewood Suites by Hilton after listening to my ‘Road Trip Blues’ late the night before, recalled her roadside tire disasters and said if we weren’t successful with Wal*Mart we should try her ‘tire man’, an apparent life saver. She was right. I spoke with the Glen the Tire Genius and he said, “come on over and I’ll get you back on the road’. No maybes, no it’s Sunday, no I’ll see what I can do’s … just “come on over and I’ll get you on the road”. That’s exactly what he did!

If you ever find yourself in SLC with tire problems, you’ll want to call Glen at Glen’s Tires –> 3368 S Redwood Rd, West Valley, UT 84119, (801) 972-8213‎.

The car’s loaded. The kids are excited. The parents are exhausted. There are 100’s and 100’s of miles of open road ahead of us. Woohoo!

And we're off
This isn’t really a hint … it’s a dead bloody giveaway! What is your guess? I am still giving away Starbucks $10 Gift Cards.

We’re all in a Panic! (coffee contest continues)

Posted on 06 November 2008 by MommyKnows

Winner is: Jennifer C —> email me @ kim (@) mommyknows (dot) com.

We’re all in a panic. Well everybody but Sam that is.

i love to see this
He’s as cool as a cucumber. Relaxed, laid back even, and getting nothing done in a hurry! ‘Nothing’ being the operative word.

We’re off on a BIG ‘ole holiday tomorrow. The kids have a whole week off for the new (and much appreciated) November break. I’m not excited yet, I have way too much left to do. Is there anybody besides me who hates to leave the house a mess when you head out on holiday? In a perfect world, I’d like to vacuum my way out of the house. Don’t hate me, it won’t happen. It’s bad enough for the holiday to end, but to have to come home to a messy house too, UGH … horrible!

I’m making lists (like the lovely Angella) and ticking stuff off as I go. They’re long, long, long lists. I feel like I am making very little headway.

Silly me! I signed up for NaBloPoMo (Mr. MK not impressed –> blogging when I should be packing). I guess that means you’re all coming along on the holiday too! I’ll give you a hint to the location tomorrow.

OH and the drugs, what a pain in the ass (no pun intended)! Obviously, they have to come as well. In a cooler and I need a mini bio-hazards container, syringes, alcohol swabs and bandages. BLECK that means the side-effects will be there too.

Enough whining already –> I LOVE ME A ROAD TRIP!
