She’ll Grow Out of it … I Hope (or Not)!

Posted on 16 August 2009 by MommyKnows

I’ve mentioned Canmore before. We love it. The scenery. We love it.

Everyday we walk downtown, along the wooden boardwalk, along a sleepy creek. Did I mention that we love it?

I can’t help, but stop to photograph flowers in the meadow.

It’s bright and sunny.

The kids interrupt, “can we play in the creek”.

“Sure, but don’t get your clothes wet”, I say.

Blue Eyes … Blue Skies

Posted on 05 April 2009 by MommyKnows

We’ve been to the mountains and back. I am a bit sad … spring break is over. I prefer it when the kids are at home and the days are our own.

The good news is, oodles of fresh air and sunshine were had by all.

Big Alberta blue skies, almost made up for the chilly temperatures (5c/40f). It should be warmer by now!

Except in Sam’s case, he couldn’t get enough of his new Power Rangers helmet.

How was your weekend?

Just What is News?

Posted on 23 January 2009 by MommyKnows

Just in case you aren’t aware, I am a news junkie. My fabulous = me curled up on the couch with pajamas, coffee, CNN BBC / CBC, laptop (because I like to read at the same time) and a cozy throw. Like now!

You’d assume then, that I know what new is, right? Right! Well, you’d be wrong, because I’ve found myself constantly thinking over the past several weeks –> THAT IS NOT NEWS! That is so NOT important! Tell me something that matters!

I am going to assume that CNN knows more about ‘what news is’ than I do. Therefore, I can only assume I know very little about what news is!

Apparently news is:

Custom made wool coats by J. Crew for the Obama girls, evidently a wise choice of clothing due to it’s affordability to the average American. If that’s accessible, I am a monkey’s uncle. When was the last time J. Crew drew mock-ups and created a one of kind coat for your kid?

I don’t want to know about the Obama’s shopping choices, I want to know about President Obama’s foreign policy choices. The coats are lovely, the girls are lovely, but they aren’t news, are they? It’s not important… it just doesn’t matter. It might deserve a mention on Inauguration Day, to fill in the gaps between star sightings and Bush bashing. I don’t think it deserves repeated airtime 4 days later! Stop it with the stinking coat coverage CNN. I don’t care about the periwinkle wool, the coral/pink combination, the frugal yet stylish satin ribbon ties. Do you?

I do care about the more than 400 children that died in Gaza over the past few weeks. I want to know and understand more about little Samar who was shot in the back at close range by Israelis defense forces. Her family was ordered to leave their home, then while the women and children exited waving a white flag all but Samar and her grandmother (who were both wounded), were shot dead.

peace
This man stood on the street of Canmore, Alberta on December 31st, 2008 (it was minus -20). He was protesting against Israel’s occupation of Gaza. Notice the right side of the box it reads: This will NOT make the news! Sadly, he was right. I wonder how the rest of the world feels when we talk about ribbons and fashion, and ignore atrocities?

I’ve recently switched to watching the BBC and CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation). They’re not perfect, but they are at least reporting stories of substance … mostly.

3 of the top 10 stories at CNN.com today:

Caylee Anthony’s grandfather reported missing, later found.
Kelly Osbourne in ‘medical facility’
Sasha’s smile could be a guide to our future

3 of the top 10 stories at BBC.com today:

Green light for US stem cell work
Deadly missiles strike Pakistan
DR Congo seeks Nkunda extradition

3 of the top 10 stories at CBC.ca

Obama meets with Democrat, Republican leaders on stimulus plan
FDA approves embryonic stem cell trial for humans
Rwanda arrests Congo rebel leader Laurent Nkunda

Dear Lord, please tell me that things haven’t gotten so terrible that the leader of the free world is going to rely on the smile of a seven year old to guide us into the future! Please!

And CNN … you promise NEWS … it’s time to ’shit or get off the pot’! –> Sorry Anderson even though you’re hot, I have to move on!

Holed Up!

Posted on 07 January 2009 by MommyKnows

Thanks for all the emails making sure that I am alive and well! With my memory the way it is, I’m pretty sure I would have forgotten I have a blog if you all hadn’t reminded me.

We had a great holiday filled with grandmas, grandpas, great-grandmas, uncles, aunts, great-aunts, great-uncles, cousins, baking (BAKING), presents, the rockies and even some skiing. Santa was kind, so kind that I am going to have to ’ship one of the children to an orphanage’ or ‘purge and organize’. It’s sad, because we really, really enjoy Georgia and will miss her.

Speaking of Georgia, this is my favorite holiday photo. Even though I came down with a chill, in early December and have had to be forced out of the house ever since, I did do a bit of skiing and went on a wee winter hike over Christmas, hence the opportunity to take an outdoor photo.

Here’s my Sammy, cuter than a speckled pup in a red-wagon wearing my dad’s crazy hat.

Lastly, here’s our Lizzy aka MISERY GUTS. Honestly, too many late nights, sweets and doting grandma’s turned her into a BEAR over the holidays. Hmmm … maybe she’d do better in the orphanage than Georgia. Hmmm … I’ll have to think on that one.

OH YEAH, I bought YOU a gift in Canmore too, but I’ll tell you about it next time. Kay?

Sam the Man!

Posted on 08 April 2008 by MommyKnows

Sam the Man!

Sam Alpine Air

I took this photo of Sam on Saturday, in Canmore along the Bow River. While Mr. MK and Lizzy skied Sam, Georgia and I spent the day throwing rocks, climbing rocks, playing in the park and I managed to sneak in a wee bit of shopping (well window shopping).

Sam is getting a hair cut tonight. The major topic of discussion around the dinner table is –> ‘really short or just a trim?’. Recently a friend of mine, has repeatedly told me, “he could be a girl, that hair … those eyes” or “imagine him with pigtails, he’d be a really pretty girl“. It is really starting to BUG me! Piss off already. The same friend has a girl who is often mistaken for a boy, surely she knows it doesn’t make anyone feel good when you say these kinds of things?

Sam likes the hair (except, when it is being brushed) and says he likes it long. He also doesn’t seem overly concerned to have it cut. I love it! If I could order hair, I would order his. The color is great, it’s thick, it curls, it’s a crime it’s on a boy’s head.

Hmmm … what to do?

Results here tomorrow!

You see that Alpine Breeze blowing through Sam’s hair? You to can have this experience (*wink*) … ***
