DIY – Felt Play Food – Makin’ Bacon …

Published by on

And pancakes with syrup and butter.

30 Tiny Moments – Day 18

Makin' Bacon
Check out the play food I made for Georgia today.

Don’t look at the stitches too closely — I DON’T SEW! I have sewn a button here and there, but that is it.

The pancakes are made from a template I ordered online. I am not going to tell you where I bought the pattern (don’t want to promote the site). Basically, she has the whole set copyrighted, which is fine, it would be wrong to redistribute etc. However, she forbids in the small print that you sell the items you make using the pattern. Which would also be OK, if they were unique and beyond the average person’s basic capabilities to design. The problem to me is that several of the items (like the fettucine noodles for example) are a no-brainer. HELLO! Cut long rectangle strips.

Essentially, once I had downloaded it and looked at it, I lost my rights to ever make anything similar and sell it. Some are so simple (fettucine, tortellini, ravioli, blueberry … etc.) and so obvious that I am sorry I bought it. If you are an etsy seller etc. you wouldn’t want to buy this. It would take away your creative rights. She could say, you copied her fettucine and, therefore, you couldn’t sell it … like we all couldn’t figure out how to cut out long strips of felt to make the pasta or make a blue ball for a blueberry!

I created the bacon myself and added wires inside to make them bendy … cool eh? Also created the syrup and butter using my own imagination. Although, my site is copyrighted, I give you permission to cut out small squares of felt and call it butter! (tongue in cheek –> you see what I mean?).

NOTE: I don’t want to go into the felt food making business (too time consuming and I can’t sew), BUT … it still annoys me.

Look here for inspiration to make your own (because this is where I saw the food first and you really don’t need patterns for most of it): http://5.pro.tok2.com/~mic/sub/gallery.html (click on the Japanese links on the left side of page).

Funny thing is … many of the copyrighted items from the patterns I bought are on this page … hmmmm!

Winners of the ‘Think Love, Think Peanut Shell® Valentine’s Day Giveaway’ will be announced tomorrow. I was too busy sewing.

That’s fantastic!! I love it, and what a fun idea!

JaimeS · February 16, 2008 at 11:46 pm

Very very cute! In the unlikely event that I have more then a couple minutes free time I might fiddle around with my own plans… trust me on this one, no copy right required for anything that I create! I can never recreate something that I’ve made a second time. I truly am a domestic not!

For “not sewing” you sure did an amazing job!! Gee – at least your coming up with utilizing wire to make the bacon bend took some thought – maybe you should copyright it!! Uh oh – I think she may have displayed some of her food on a PLATE… I think you may have just violated copyright laws by putting your food on a plate too *rolls eyes*

Mefeng · February 17, 2008 at 2:14 am

Absolutely CUTE!!! I love them. They made me so hungry;=) Your bacon is so creative too. I can’t believe that you can’t sew. You really did a great job. I can’t sew myself either. Now, I must check out the website.

I think you did a great job on the felt pancakes!! The bacon is very cute too!!

I don’t blame you for not wanting to promote that website. Hope I don’t get sued for cutting out little yellow squares and calling them “butter.” :)

OHHHH I LOVE IT! How brilliant! Guess what my next project will be? I love the peelable banana on the Japanese site. It looks like it has velcro on the end. VERY cool. Thank you so much for sharing.

Oh man you have far too much free time! I just go to the dollar store and buy plastic food. I know, they were made in China and it supports communist rule , , but at this point in my lfe spending the time with my children and getting some sleep is far more important to me. Maybe once the kiddies learn to sleep through the night I’ll find my creative side again.

Isn’t it crazy what people will copywrite like that?? It’s a huge issue in the wahm creative world, and it makes me NUTS. sigh. What can you do though?

You should see my kick ass crocheted tea set. ;) And knit sushi? I rock the knit sushi!

Hi, I am impressed with your sewn food goodies. I can’t even sew a button on! Will you be my mommy?! Cindi

katie bowen · February 17, 2008 at 11:43 am

ok…so i thought your felt food was so freakin’ cool (i’d never seen it before) that i borrowed grammie’s sewing machine and tried my hand at it…my suggestion to folks is that you do most of it by hand. it was really hard to do the fine details with the sewing machine…if u have no idea what u are doing.

i looked at the ETSY site and did the easy ones: started with 2 fish, the sunny side up eggs (super easy…u could even do this with glue and no sewing) carrots and an apple were sorta hard…the lettuce leaves were my favorite.

fun and nice for the artsy mom who never gets a chance to get creative!

Kait · February 17, 2008 at 12:20 pm

That bacon is so cute! I’m going to make some.

Kim · February 17, 2008 at 12:40 pm

Great Job! I think you might have given me some motivation to try…

mommyknows · February 17, 2008 at 1:06 pm

@ ALL – OK … I’ve gone kind of crazy … I now have made pizza, 1/2 cookies, burger with fixin’s, carrots, and strawberries. Oh yeah and bowtie pasta.

I am starting on the pb&j!

Just incase you are wondering the kids are with grandma for the weekend, so I am not neglecting them (just the house work).

Who knew crafts were so much fun!
