DIY Lavender Sugar Scrub

Published by on

One of my favourite products has to be my French Lavender Organic Sugar Scrub from Rocky Mountain Soap Company. Actually, they make a lot of my favourite products. Needless to say when I happened upon a recipe for sugar scrub on Inhabitots and saw that it was a fairly easy process, I decided to try making my own.

I just can’t follow ‘recipe’ instructions to the letter (it’s a disease I inherited from my mother), so I used the ingredient list from my favourite sugar scrub and the recipe at Inhabitots and came up with a method / recipe of my own.

I decided I didn’t want to make a huge batch or several containers, mostly because I’m not sure of the shelf-life. So I decided to make the recipe to fit the container. You can do the same …

Ingredients:

You’ll need one container with a lid.

All amounts are based on the size of your container.

Organic Cane Sugar
Baby Oil with vitamin. E
Jojoba Oil
Lavender essential oil (or another essential oil of your choice)

Notes: There are all kinds of oils you can use. Many sites I looked at recommended light olive oil, all said baby oil was ‘okay’. I choose baby oil and jojoba because they were convenient. The baby oil I chose had just two ingredients: mineral oil and vitamin e. As vitamin e was a listed ingredient in my favourite brand and reportedly good for your skin, I decided the baby oil would be a good choice.

There are also many kinds of sugar, I chose organic cane because I wanted a larger grain. I also like the brown colour, it looks more natural. If you wanted you could use regular white sugar.

My creation

Directions:

I used my ‘scrub container’ to measure out the amount of sugar needed. I filled it to about the 2/3 or 3/4 mark and then dumped it into a small mixing bowl. I then added several drops of lavender essential oil and mixed thoroughly. Next I filled the ‘scrub container’ to the 1/4 mark with baby oil and added enough jojoba oil to raise the fluid level to about the 1/3 mark. I poured the oil mixture in with the sugar and mixed with a fork. The amounts were just right.

This means the sugar to oil ration is about 2:1 (two parts sugar to one part oil). It’s best to use a little less oil to start rather than adding too much.

Estimated cost: $3.00 including the ‘scrub container’ and I have plenty of supplies left to make more.

I’ve tried it and it’s wonderful.

Enjoy!

Mmm, I make my own scrub too. I often add just olive oil to mine and sometimes I use brown sugar!

Why not keep it 100% natural and remove the baby oil and replace with sweet almond or grapeseed oil. We use Dead sea salt instead of sugar but epsom salts would be just as good to make a body scrub.
