My Romance Novel – Chapters Eleven and Twelve – (nanowrimo)

Today is the last day to make the 50000 word goal for NaNoWriMo. I’m just over 4400 words away from that goal. The book, however, has no ending in site.

I feel like I’ve sort of written myself into a corner. Hmmm …

These are not my favourite two chapters.

Chapter Eleven

“Johnson here,” Lane answered his cell phone.

He’d spent the last hour in the kitchen, drinking coffee and going over the case. He’d written down several questions for Bridget (who was still locked in her office). He’d called into the station about a half-hour ago to give the Chief an update. The Chief hadn’t had any news for him, so he was a bit surprised to be getting a return call so quickly and hoped the Chief was calling to say they’d found another Bridget Riley that seemed to be a more likely associate of Max Giovanni.

Unfortunately, the news wasn’t about ‘another’ Bridget, but was relevant to the case nonetheless. The car the car belonging to Frank’s sister had been found, on an abandoned oil lease road south west of Edmonton. Frank and Robbins had been found in the trunk. Both had been shot execution style between the eyes.

The officers on the scene found a note in Robbins’s pocket. It read:

Bridget Riley
Photographer / Blogger
10425 – 94th Street

Accompanying the note had been a photo of Bridget. His Bridget, well not his Bridget but the Bridget he’d been ordered to keep safe. Damn, the note and the photo made the mistaken identity theory a lot less likely and that was disappointing.

The Chief was sending a copy of the note, the photo and several photos of this morning’s crime scene. He’d sounded surprised when Lane had requested the latter, but hadn’t questioned him.

Lane waited until the evidence folder arrived before knocking on Bridget’s office door. He knew she wasn’t going to be happy to see him, and very likely uncooperative, but he didn’t particularly care. He felt a little twinge of guilt when he thought about the unshed tears he’d seen in her eyes earlier in the morning, but quickly quashed the feeling. Bridget needed to understand that this was serious business and he hoped the contents of the folder he held in his hand would help him to do that.

Bridget threw her back and let out a hearty laugh. “You’re killing me Detective. I’m not mailing-posting. I’m blog posting. It’s what I do, well that and photography. “

“You mean like a hobby, or for a living?” Lane was interested, how in the heck did you make a living writing a blog?

“A living of course, I have to eat and pay bills,” Bridget snapped. “I suppose you think I live off of my parents? Am I right Detective?”

“I hadn’t thought about it,” Lane lied. One quick glance at her disbelieving expression, made him switch gears. “Okay fine, you’re right. I figured you probably have a trust fund or something. Are you telling me you don’t?”

“That’s exactly what I’m telling you,” Bridget retorted. She crossed her arms over her pink bag and stared straight ahead. She didn’t even want to look a Lane Johnson. It seemed he had a bunch of preconceived ideas about whom and what she was, so far it seemed like ‘probable criminal’ and ‘spoiled rich girl’ were at the top of his list. She wondered what other negative labels he’d conjured up.

Well she had better things to do than prove her worth to the likes of Lane Johnson. Even if he was the best-looking man she’d ever laid eyes on. Oh dear Lord, she was doing it again, she thought. Stop. It. Bridget.

“So tell me about blogging, explain to me how it works,” Lane prodded. He could tell from her body language and the frosty atmosphere in the cab of his truck that he’d managed to piss her off AGAIN!

Silence.

“Oh come on Bridget, give a guy a break,” he appealed.

Lane stood to greet the Riley’s as they entered the room (and what a horrible room it was). He supposed it cost a fortune and he knew enough to know it was professionally decorated. Professional or not the couch was damn uncomfortable and so was he.

The two older Riley’s were exactly as he’d expected. Joe Riley looked every bit the polished lawyer and Edith Riley was, well a very well preserved socialite. Bridget, however, was a surprise. A BIG surprise! She wasn’t too big, it’s just that he’d seen her mother, and he had a whole different Bridget Riley living in his imagination. Damn, those were really pink boots, and a very red jacket! His previous partner had been a red head and he was pretty sure she’d told him red heads didn’t wear red. “Well if Bridget Riley is a target, she won’t be hard to spot”, he said to himself silently.

“Detective Johnson, I’m Joe Riley”, Lane grasped Mr. Riley’s hand with a firm grip as the older man came forward to introduce himself. “I believe you’ve met, my wife and this of course is my daughter Bridget.”

“Sir, it’s a pleasure”, he gave a nod to Mrs. Riley and then turned to Bridget. “Miss Riley”.
Bridget stepped forward to offer the Detective her hand, “Detective Riley. I hope we didn’t keep you waiting very long. I was just trying to explain to my father how unnecessary this all is, and well it must be a mistake.”

Lane paused and gave her a hard stare, “Well Miss Riley, the powers that be, disagree and I’d have to say the powers that be get my vote”. Lane really wanted to ask her what made her so sure it was a mistake, but his gut told him that grilling her here and now with her parents was a mistake.

“As I’ve told Bridget, the mistake is going back to that … that place, that house. She’d be much safer here”, Edie supplied looking to Lane for confirmation.

“You also get my vote Mrs. Riley”, Lane smiled at the older woman and then glanced toward Bridget just in time to receive the full effect of the ‘stink-eye’ she was sending his way. Whoa, if looks could kill, he’d be a dead man. He had a sneaking suspicion that he’d just landed himself on the wrong side of Miss Bridget Riley.

Rotten (Easter) Eggs

I set out to write a post about the fabulous napkin decoupage eggs I was going to make. The kids of course needed ‘dye’, so kid #1 bought the deluxe kit. It had everything in it, stickers, paint, glitter, glue, sponge painters, brushes … TOO MUCH stuff. I’ve always been […]

Home Sweet Home

We finally made it home, about 2 a.m. I missed the hotel breakfast this morning! One of my favorite things about holidays is, no cooking. I just can’t get excited about food prep (not that I try). I had to take my ‘bad’ drug last night. I am taking two […]

30 Tiny Moments - Day 18

I feel it’s necessary to point out that it is actually quite warm here today (above freezing). I don’t want Mother Nature to punish me for dissing the weather! It could be 40 below.

The kids are off school today, we’re being lazy. I am thinking about making felt play food for Georgia. Too bad I can’t sew (buttons yes, creations NO). I’ll keep thinking about it.
