Sew Incredibly Wrong – Create a Craft Apron from Old Jeans

Posted on 29 May 2009 by MommyKnows

I am the proud owner of a sewing table (will miracles never cease?). ME, the me that was once proud to open beer bottles with her teeth … SEWS! Not well mind you, but I do sew. I digress, back to the table, this table was my great-grandmothers, her daughter, my great-aunt had it until her passing on Good Friday and my lovely cousin gave it to ME! I am thrilled to pieces with it. Thanks Lorraine!

While I was in the shower this morning, Georgia pulled the table and the machine into the kitchen and begged me to sew her a dog. I couldn’t find the brown cashmere sweater that I had planned to turn into a dog, so I talked her into a craft apron instead.

These old jeans of Sam’s were handy.

I intended to follow the instructions in this magazine ‘sew simple‘.

Right from the get-go, I had to break the rules.

The instructions are for an adult sized apron, using adult sized jeans. The length would have made it an ankle length garment. Basically, I just started cutting.

An old dress of Lizzy’s is going to be the waistband and ties.

I gave up on the instructions completely when I got the to the waistband. With the changed dimensions, it just wasn’t working.

I just folded, cut, ironed and pinned until it looked like it was going to work. This was my first ‘attached’ waistband and it was a FREAKIN’ HUGE wee bit of a disaster. The top stitch missed the denim (DUH) on the top seam, so I ended up zigzaging over the waistband twice. Once to make sure it was attached and once to make it look better (not sure that worked).

This also about the time I stopped taking step-by-step photos. I was to busy swearing and sweating. Hayley finally reminded me, “MOM … it’s for Georgia, she won’t care about your sewing!”. I freakin’ know that Hayley … BUT, I CARE!!

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, “I sew like a drunk driver!”

In the magazine photo, the pockets and belt loops were removed and sewn on intact. My machine even with a brand new denim needle just wouldn’t go through all those layers of fabric neatly. I ended up cutting all the folded seams off the pockets and belt loops and zigzagging them onto the skirt, along with a cute little heart.

It was right about this stage I considered taking a Valium. The STRESS. If only I could follow instructions. What is it about sewing and instructions?! Or is it me?

denim apron

Oh well, not so bad in the end. A wee bit messy, but I’ve heard practice makes perfect.

Of course, ‘Georgia, Georgia quite contrary’ had to be forced into the apron for photos. Miserable cuss!

To the moon Georgia, to the moon!

Honey … I’m home!

Posted on 28 May 2009 by MommyKnows

I’m still being tested, so far one test just leads to another. Lucky me … today I was the recipient of a transvaginal ultrasound (sorry guys TMI) … let’s just say, “I feel violated”. Something isn’t right, but I’ve decided, if I am dying, it’s not going to be really soon! Just in case I have a few funeral songs picked out.

Last Monday it snowed, this Monday the kids were playing in the sprinkler.

summer or spring

All the trees are flowering, there are LEAVES!

unmowed lawn

And FLOWERS! My neighbors don’t mow their lawn more than once per season. These pretty purple flowers grow wild all over their front yard.

Fabulous, eh?

Mr. MK quit smoking about 2 months ago. He’s gained about 2 OZ and we’re now exercising after supper.

hubby on wheels 1

That’s him up ahead on roller blades. I was trying to ride my bike and take photos with my iPhone all at the same time, hence, the crappy photo.

I’m hitting the road Monday, but I am not telling you where. You’ll just have to stop in and find out. It’s a rather luxurious vacay, with no hubby (*sob*) and no kiddies (*yippee sob*). There’s loads of food, the views should be fabulous, and the weather, well it may be ‘iffy’.

Spinal Tap (check)

Posted on 20 May 2009 by MommyKnows

The spinal tap went remarkably well, it was virtually painless. I was impressed. I’ve had epidurals, so I was pretty sure I knew what to expect. The epidurals were all administered in the throws of labour, so I wasn’t sure if they were painless OR if the pain was just minor in comparison to massive uterine contractions.

I was one of those women who hollered at the anesthesiologist, “forget about the stinkin’ side effects, just shut-up and get the damn needle in my back!”.

WARNING: DO NOT under any circumstances decide to speed up your labour, by turning up the oxytocin rate/dose in the IV drip all by yourself.

I have the world’s 2ND worse backache … it fades when I lay down. BONUS –> I love an excuse to get horizontal.

Spinal tap kit
This is the creepy ‘lumbar puncture kit’ … they took three large tubes of spinal fluid. I was going to get the med-student to take a picture of the procedure, BUT I figured I wasn’t up to seeing my back-fat in photos, AND I like you all way too much to put you through it.

Bloody tests
Just when I thought I was done, they remembered that they needed blood to go along with the spinal fluid. Again not a big deal … I am just kind of sick of the ‘bloody needles’.

Speaking of needles, I am off my MS drugs until my ‘lump’ is diagnosed. I am so happy to go injection free for a while. YIPPEE

My ultra-sound is tomorrow and then it is back to waiting … and waiting …
